November is the new January! Here’s what I mean. November is when to lay the foundation to have the best year ever. I am not talking about resolutions. I am talking about forming world-class habits, so you can set yourself up for being your best in 2018. Whether it’s getting fit, earning a promotion or forming better relationships with your colleagues or family, there is one way that WILL help you move the needle now, so you can be off to the races by January:

Get Accountable!

Here are a few tips to get started that are backed by the research of Dr. Anders Ericsson, author of Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise:

  1. Find a Teacher/Coach to Be Accountable to:
Preferably one who is an expert in whatever you would like to do. Making significant progress beyond a certain level of competency requires knowledge beyond what we can provide to ourselves. To use this (very important!) person effectively, be sure to be ready to do steps #2 and #3.
  2. Be Ready to Get Uncomfortable:
Getting better can be hard work especially if you want to head into uncharted territory. Whether it’s running your first race, qualifying for the Boston Marathon, learning to become more productive or presenting with more influence, world-class performers are prepared to sweat in order to grow.
  3. Set Aside Focused and Dedicated Practice Time:
Once you learn from an expert what to do to get better, you have to do it, preferably sooner rather than later. Set aside uninterrupted time as close to your coaching as possible to practice what you learned.

Now when your friends, family or colleagues are sharing the big dreams for the new year in January, you will already by on your way to success!
