What if you focused on taking the time and protection that you need to take to ensure that you are getting paid and on time? According to this study, 58% of freelancers have not been paid for their work in 4 countries in Southeast Asia. Additionally, according to this article by Experian, freelancers on average, are being paid late 18+ days after the payment is due.

3 proactive tips to help protect yourself:

  1. If you are a small business owner and/or freelancer, invest the time and money to consult with a contracts lawyer (in your local area) to ensure that the terms of the agreement are favourable for you.
  2. Make sure that you have enough time (and mental space) to sign the contract, without being rushed by outside parties. Asking for a deposit is a very good idea; not starting work before the deposit is paid in full will help to protect you.
  3. Give yourself the opportunity to negotiate with amends that truly work for you.

What if you asked for exactly what you wanted? It’s true that you may not get it all, though it’s a good feeling (and a small win!) to know that you at least voiced your opinions. As a another win, you’ve also made others aware that you have basic needs that need to be met.

What if you said ‘no’ to the clients who are not respecting your time and energy? Saying no can save your energy and focus for work that will be better suited and aligned with your personal goals.

Focusing on what works for you, ignoring the external pressure and the real fears of not having money can be challenging. Especially in light of what is happening on Social Media, let’s be real…it can all be very overwhelming.

What if you shifted your focus on the things that bring you #joy and #gratitude instead of the things that you don’t have or wish you had?

The pivotal questions that I kept coming back to:

“How would you feel if you were to put yourself first in every situation?”

“How would you protect your inner space to be filled with energy that serves you?”

“How can you negotiate terms so that you can do your best work?”

Top tip: Carve out some time for yourself to have ‘blank space’ to just be. It will give you the mental headspace to be more proactive, instead of just reacting to your client’s requests. I know that it’s easier said than done. Although I haven’t had a ‘real holiday’ in a while, I have to keep doing the little things that bring me joy to also keep me sane. Even if others don’t understand or approve of it.
