It is the end of week three as we continue to observe voluntary isolation and practise social distancing.  I’m sure you too are connecting with friends and family through on-line platforms that encourage BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee) meetings and discussions to keep in touch.  I must admit; I’ve been enjoying the relaxed atmosphere that seems to be evident within my community.

While no one disregards the severity of our current situation, it is certainly giving us an opportunity to reflect and take another look at what is important in life.  Asking ourselves similar questions about the future as we all begin to navigate a new sense of normal.

Forever the optimist, I have always looked for the silver lining in each challenging situation.  I feel there are personal lessons to be learned and opportunities that occur as we pause and reflect on our current situation.

Breathing techniques and guided meditation have become two of my daily routines that provide a sense of calm and assist with anxiety and fear.  In addition to these resources, I have found three unexpected benefits to voluntary isolation:

1) Sense of Time (No Alarm Clock; No Watch)
With a schedule that now has a lot of open space, I’ve taken a look at how
I value time.  I’ve stopped using my alarm clock, something I that I
continued during week one and two.  Last Monday, I turned off the
alarm, in fact, I’m no longer wearing a watch and I’ve noticed there is a
sense of freedom to being in-the-moment. Taking the time to enjoy the
aroma in a good cup of coffee, trying new recipes and reading a good
book are things I would not have noticed a few weeks ago.  I find myself
with a renewed appreciation for the simple things in life.

2) Healthy Perspective (Diet; Exercise)
A balanced diet including exercise is part of my daily routine.
Now that I am spending more time planning meals and
activities throughout the day, I find that I’m eating better!
Smaller portions with lots of leafy greens, vegetables and
protein is contributing to increased energy… without snacking!
I am not only enjoying cooking, but started sharing recipes
with friends.  As an added benefit, I set the table with linen
napkins, fresh flowers and candles to enjoy the “dining
    experience.”

3) Life Long Learning… (On-line Courses)
I have always had a commitment to life-long learning. There
are many on-line platforms available for both the hobbyist
or those with an interest in higher education. Courses
you may complete at your own place and in the comfort of
your home. Many are currently offering discounts or free
introductions. I am going to flip open the laptop, grab a chair
and start something new! They are a great way to pass the
time and focus on positive outcomes.

We are all in this together!

As we prepare for the coming week, our primary objective will continue with a commitment to social responsibility and safety within our communities.  What I find interesting is that with each passing week we are each reconnecting with our personal goals and objectives.  Talking about our passion, core values and vision for the future. Our conversations are changing from a focus on “I” to “We.” It is an opportunity to take step back and create space for a new perspective.
