One of the most common questions I get asked as a career coach is: How can I get a job that I love?

Work is a reality for everyone, but employees these days are more focused on career fulfillment and purpose than ever before. That means if you’re searching for a dream job, not just a job, you’re not alone! But you might not know where to start.

Don’t worry, we got this! Here are my three favorite tips to follow when trying to land that dream job.

1. Build a strong network.

According to a 2016 LinkedIn survey, 85% of jobs are filled through networking, which means having a strong network and knowing how to utilize those skills are so important for finding your perfect job!

You can build your network by sending email invitations, reaching out to those on your level, and stay proactive. I like to think of networking like going on a bunch of first dates… You don’t want to come on too strong, but you want to foster those human connections everyone looks for.

2. Know how to interview well.

I’ve seen some of the worst interview blunders in my time as a career coach, from over explaining yourself to coming in with a negative disposition. Things you may not even think about could work against you… 17% of hiring managers have said asking the interviewer personal questions actually counts against you.

If you want to nail your interview, try practicing common interview questions so you’re able to give concise, hirable answers.

3. Do your research.

Part of interviewing well, and landing that dream job, is knowing the ins and outs of the job you’re applying for! Take the time to get to know the company, the job, and the hiring manager. Check Glassdoor, LinkedIn, or other resources to learn as much as you can. The more prepared you are, the better.

This can also apply to doing your research about yourself. You may know your dream job, but do you know exactly what it entails? What skills you need? Take the time to really dive in to what you want, and what it takes to get there.

Getting your dream job can seem just like that…A dream. But you have the tools to make it a reality! If you know how to network, interview, and research well, you’ll have the skills to land that job you’ve always wanted.
