It’s easy to have a fixed mindset. We all do it. In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They are so wrong. But we were all brought up to think like this. The documenting our intelligence starts with class tests, striving for the gold star, league tables then the GCSEs and A’levels (in the UK), the your CV, then university (for some) then a LinkedIn profile – see where I’m going with this? It works for the majority but it doesn’t work for everyone. Also a fixed mindset is so yesterday…
“In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.”
Written by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation. She should know. Her great book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success is a brilliant read. Let’s reframe this thinking, if you embrace a growth mindset you will :
Appreciate yourself more.
More likely to perform better.
Learn and grow more.
Enjoy what you are doing more.
Likely to be happy.
Enjoy happier relationships.
Likely to sleep more soundly.
Here’s some thinking that may help you make the change and embrace it….
-
Whatever it is, you can always develop in it, even if it’s simply figuring out how to do it more efficiently or differently.
-
Be true to yourself. It doesn’t matter what anyone else think of you – it’s not your business. Focus on learning and growing, be the very best version of you that you can be and you will be appreciated and seen in a completely different positive light for wanting to continuously develop and grow.
-
Take risks, embrace change and look for challenges and try things differently.
-
Raise your resilience anything worth having does not happen easily for a reason.
-
Hard work, grit and determination will get you where you want to be.
-
Welcome constructive feedback to help you move forward.
-
Be a professional learner and take inspiration from those around you. Seek to learn from their secrets behind their success. Learn from their learnings.
So I’d encourage you all to swap from having a pre set fixed mindset and embrace the change to a growth mindset – don’t say I didn’t tell you…
