I recently attended a networking event and was asked “How do you feed your soul?” At first, I thought it was an odd question to ask someone you had just met a few minutes ago, but the conversation that followed was very interesting.
We all understand the concept of making deposits and withdrawals to and from our bank accounts. These transactions contribute to our overall success. Sometimes they include payment terms such as “net 30 days” and at other times “due upon receipt.” Of course, this involves monetary sales or services.
What about our emotional bank account?
How many times do we make deposits that contribute to our well-being?
They too may have what I’d call “enjoyment terms” redeemable at the time or in the not to distant future. They are the events we enjoy when we take the time to do something just for ourselves.
Here are a few things we discussed:
- Taking time to meet with friends and family and have “fun” –
celebrate any occasion - Sports activities – spectator and participatory
- Rest and relaxation – how about taking a nap?
- Enjoy good food… – either cook or restaurant
- Reading – a good book is a great escape
- Meditation – a few minutes each day is a great deposit
- Fitness – whatever your pleasure it contributes to our well-being
- Holidays – travel abroad or staycation it is a great change of scenery
- Movies – let your imagination wander
- Just be…enjoy your hobby
The list may be endless when you begin to think about all of the ways that you are able to contribute to your emotional bank account. The measure of success is how you feel…energized, happy and content are a few words that come to mind. This too may have a ledger of positive emotions that encourage us all to look forward to another day.
I made a personal list of all of the “things” that I would do for regular deposits. I’d like this account to be at full capacity, with very few withdrawals or at the very least with a reserve fund that will carry me through the challenges in life.
It is an interesting concept, easy to visualize and a great way to start a new conversation.
The next time I attend the next networking event after introducing myself as an author, coach and speaker, I will be ready to ask the question:
How do you feed your soul?
I’ll be prepared to share a few suggestions on how we may contribute to our own emotional bank account.
