Feeling tired all the time is a common complaint that can be caused by or worsened by lifestyle choices such as diet, activity level, and stress. Fatigue and chronic tiredness also affect your ability to concentrate and remember information, making it difficult to focus on tasks. Making a few simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference in your energy and concentration levels:

1. Eat a balanced diet

Diet plays a crucial role in energy production, as the body needs a steady supply of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in order to thrive. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and high-quality protein can make a huge difference in your physical and mental health. Eating large meals or continually snacking throughout the day can put a strain on your digestive system and leave you feeling sluggish. Eating small, regular meals helps your food to digest more easily.

2. Stabilize your blood sugar

Eating processed food, refined carbohydrates, and foods high in sugar cause your blood sugar level to spike, followed by a sudden drop that leaves you feeling tired, irritable and unable to concentrate. Cutting back on these foods (or only eating them at the end of the day when you no longer need energy) helps stabilize your blood sugar level, leading to a steady supply of energy throughout the day.

3. Exercise regularly

Regular exercise helps combat several causes of fatigue, including obesity, fluctuating blood sugar levels and stress. Exercise also stimulates the release of natural feel-good chemicals in the body, improving your mood, memory, and ability to concentrate. You don’t have to spend hours at the gym to benefit from increased activity, either; walking, running, cycling, swimming and any other activities that get your heart pumping will improve your overall health.

4. Learn to relax

Stress is a major cause of fatigue, as well as many other ailments, such as headaches, digestive disorders, muscle tension, and frequent infections. Learning to relax helps reduce stress and physical tension. Meditation, breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided relaxation exercises are all excellent tools to combat stress. The key is in finding the right technique to suit your needs and lifestyle.

5. Limit stimulants

Stimulants, such as caffeine, energy drinks, and nicotine, can provide short-term energy boosts, but there are usually negative consequences, such as increased muscle tension, anxiety, and irritability. Routinely using stimulants for physical and mental energy can also backfire and cause sudden drops in your energy levels. Limiting the number of stimulants you use is essential for beating fatigue.

Fatigue and poor concentration can be frustrating, but they are also beatable. Making a few simple lifestyle changes can help you overcome tiredness and improve your ability to focus, giving you back that energy and drive that helps make life feel exciting, nourishing, and worthwhile.
