In the day-to-day work atmosphere, I find that if I don’t make a conscious effort to engage in conversations with my coworkers that I’ll get overlooked in the regular klatches. My job takes me places where I’m mostly by myself. But a coworker did give me a clear opening into a conversation once. Mary was at her workstation talking to a friend. They were lightheartedly debating something and weren’t sure if either of their approaches was correct.

“Maybe John knows,” Mary said. It was an act so simple yet memorable, though the conversation which I had wanted to participate in doesn’t seem so memorable. I was put on the spot – in a good way. I had the attention of several people and was able to open up freely. Relating felt good. And it only made me look for these little connections moreso in every aspect of life.
