Thrive Global founder and CEO Arianna Huffington joined the Morning Joe team Friday morning to discuss the science of sleep, the economic impacts of sleep deprivation and why a certain president-elect should stop bragging about sleep deprivation.

“The vast majority need seven to nine hours of sleep,” Arianna said. “When you get that, you’re operating on all cylinders. Right now, millions of people are running on empty.”

It’s essential that our leaders be well-rested, Arianna said, noting that with less or worse sleep, “your impulse control goes down” and “your decision making is impaired.”

Sleep deprivation isn’t just an individual problem — it’s a global problem that costs the U.S. $411B a year.

For the many who are dependent on sleep aids, breaking that habit is possible. First, read up on the science, Arianna said, and stop treating sleep as “something optional.”

Another method is to disconnect from your devices — Arianna recommends charging gadgets outside of the bedroom.
