Getting married is a life-altering decision that should never be taken lightly, but one that can also define ‘the next phase of your life’.

Film and fashion icon, the late Ms. Audrey Hepburn, defined her idea of married life like this;

“If I get married, I want to be very married.”

Of course, the statement was meant as a joke. Either, you are married or you are not. But to reiterate, what she was really referring to was the level of commitment in a marriage, and how much she was looking forward to being part of the experience.

However, commitment is NOT the only attribute to a successful marriage. It is also a matter of the mindset!

So, here are the 5 things that you need to understand before deciding to get married.

1. Loneliness: Your partner will not magically take away your feeling of loneliness and all the grief associated with it. And neither will you for him/her. Do not get married because you’re lonely, get married because you want to share your life with a partner

2. Impossible Expectations: Your partner will let you down sometimes, and so will you. He is not ‘Superman’ and she is not ‘Wonder Woman’. So when he/she fails, don’t let the disappointment make you forget all the super things he’s done and the all wonderful things she has done, in the past!

3. Love – Fantasy VS Reality: Movies and stories are a fantasy designed to keep you entertained and distracted. Reality is making time for each other to have a conversation about the kind of day you had, even if it’s for 5 minutes, every day! In other words, love is making time for each other, because you care about one another.

4. Tolerance Vs Acceptance: This is what every relationship comes down to; what can’t you and your partner tolerate about each other, and what can you and your partner accept! In other words, the flaws that you’re willing to accept or tolerate, and the flaws you cannot!

5. Life long Commitment: Marriage is meant to be for a lifetime. Sure, you can get divorced. But if you go down that path, you mush ask yourself how many times you are willing to do this? Which means if something is broken you try to fix it, before thinking about throwing it away.
