Here’s good news for fans of flat shoes and workplace equality: The province of British Columbia passed a law on Friday banning mandatory high heels at work.
As anyone who’s regularly worn heels throughout the workday knows, the shoes can wreak short and long term havoc on your feet. This new regulation protects against gender-based discrimination in addition to outlining safety standards for a variety of workplace footwear, as The Huffington Post reports.
Canada isn’t the only place trying to level the workplace footwear playing field: Earlier this year, the U.K. moved to amend a similarly antiquated law allowing employers to tell women they had to wear heels, brought to attention after a woman was sent home for wearing flats.
