When you have the opportunity to ask some of the most interesting people in the world about their lives, sometimes the most fascinating answers come from the simplest questions. The Thrive Questionnaire is an ongoing series that gives an intimate look inside the lives of some of the world’s most successful people.

Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Carol Goll: Take out my Jack Russell terrier for a short walk by the ocean.

TG: What gives you energy?
CG: Running first thing in the morning and being around inspiring people.
TG: What’s your secret life hack?
CGI love astrology and read two different horoscopes every day before I start my day.
TG: Name a book that changed your life.
CGThe Art of War by Sun Tzu
TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
CGIt sleeps next to me. My home is fully-automated by my phone so I set the alarm and turn off the lights from my bed at night and reset everything from my phone first thing in the morning. And I always read news headlines from my phone before getting out of bed.

TGHow do you deal with email?
CGI prioritize work emails with those that need immediate feedback as well as email from friends and family. And, I try and keep a 24 hour response rule on the rest as communication is key in my business.
TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
CGReach out to a friend I haven’t connected with in a while.

TGWhen was the last time you felt burned out and why?
CGDue to lack of sleep from too much travel or lack of balance in my work/personal life.
TG: When was the last time you felt you failed and how did you overcome it?
CGI look at failures more as just road blocks or “set backs.” Personal and professional growth stems from reflecting on these moments, learning from them and having the strength and courage to keep moving forward.
TG: Share a quote that you love and that gives you strength or peace.
CGTwo come to mind:
“You must do the things you think you cannot do” – Eleanor Roosevelt.
And my grandpa always told me growing up, “99% of things you worry about, never happen.”
