Our mission to address oral health challenges took us to the heart of Limon, where we witnessed firsthand the resilience, beauty, and unique culture of the indigenous community.

A Journey of Discovery:
As we embarked on our journey to Colegio Indigena de Shiroles Talamanka, we were filled with anticipation and curiosity. This remote community, nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Costa Rica, is often overlooked and underserved. However, what we discovered there was beyond our wildest imagination.
The warmth and hospitality of the Shiroles Talamanka people welcomed us with open arms. We immersed ourselves in their rich traditions, vibrant art, and captivating stories. The students of Colegio Indigena, with their contagious smiles, reminded us of the resilience and strength that lies within indigenous communities.
Addressing Oral Health Challenges:
Unspoken Smiles recognizes that indigenous communities often face unique healthcare challenges, including limited access to oral health resources. We believe that everyone deserves access to proper oral healthcare, regardless of their circumstances. Unfortunately, indigenous communities often face barriers to receiving such care. We were determined to tailor our solutions to meet the specific needs of the Shiroles Talamanka community. This collaboration aimed to improve oral health education and provide sustainable solutions for the community’s dental care.
We extend a heartfelt gratitude to the American Dental Association for their generous in-kind donation of dental supplies. This support enabled us to provide each child at the Colegio Indigena de Shiroles Talamanka with a yearly supply of toothbrushes. Such partnerships are a testament to the immense impact that can be achieved when organizations come together to uplift marginalized communities. Witnessing the transformation in their smiles and the gratitude in their eyes was a deeply rewarding experience.
While addressing oral health challenges, we also recognized the importance of preserving indigenous traditions. We worked closely with the community to integrate their cultural practices into our healthcare initiatives. By incorporating traditional wisdom and herbal remedies, we not only promoted oral health but also celebrated their ancient knowledge.
