Itegration is an urgent matter in Italy. According to Save The Children, 62.672 children landed Italian coasts between January 2011 and December 2016. One out of six girls and boys were unaccompanied. They fled their homelands, countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Syria and Somalia. They escaped scenarios of war and extreme poverty, hoping to find a safe and welcoming nest that would provide love and warmth, that would somehow dim the terrible memories no child should ever have to carry the weight of.
Numbers like these represent an emergency and education is fundemental. Planning an organized and coordinated effort to integrate immigrant children into society by making diversity a positive and accepted value in schools throughout the country, is the most effective way to eradicate the onset of racism.
The idea is to help children communicate even when physical, psycological or language barriers are present. The best way to reach a child’s heart, the best way to help children connect to one another and become friends is art. Music, dance, acting, singing, painting, the arts are a universal language. Through them we express the beauty that lies within and learn to see beauty in others.
This is why I was thrilled to learn of the existence of an international non-profit organization called Mus-e right here where I live, in Fermo Italy.
Mus-e (Musique Europe) was founded in 1993 by world-renowned violinist Lord Yehudi Menuhin, who passed away in 1999, and by the director of the Music Conservatory of Berna, Werner Schmitt. They were inspired by Hungarian composer Zoltàn Kodàly whom was an ethnomusicologist and pedagogue. Kodàly believed music to be an important part of a child’s education, capable of moulding us into good human beings.
Mus-e soon became a project that aimed to foster the growth of art in European schools but also around the world. Today,over 50,000 children, 450 schools an
1,000 artists whom are also professional educators, participate in the endevour of making art the gateway to integration between the people of our planet.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Mus-e Italy’s vice president Costanza Garrone, national coordinator Rita Costato Costantini and press office manager Carlo Pagliacci.
They told me nearly 12,000 school-age children from every part of Italy participate in the organization’s artistic programs which are free of cost. This is possible thanks to private donations which are not always easy to come by.
The organization’s goal is to keep growing and give every kid the possibility to access their activities. In fact Mus-e is always more than happy to welcome those who wish to start building a headquarter in their city, anywhere in the world! The best part is watching children smile and have fun, it’s watching them participate and freely express their crativity no matter the color of their skin, the shape of their eyes, the language they speak or the religion they practice. Whether they are singing, dancing, acting or drawing they are friends, they are like brothers and sisters.
Come to think of it, I know of a fair number of adults who could use a little Mus-e in their lives. They are the ones who build walls instead of bridges; but I have a feeling their time is almost up. An army of children can and will wipe out their hateful ways with love.

Bambini che Sorridono
Non sarebbe spettacolare se ogni singola immagine di bambini che soffrono povertà, guerra e violenza potesse essere sostituita da fotografie di bimbi e di bimbe sorridenti, che giocano e prosperano in ogni angolo della terra? In Italia, l’associazione Mus-e si adopera per raggiungere proprio questo obiettivo.

L’ integrazione è una questione urgente in Italia. I numeri di Save The Children non mentono. Tra gennaio 2011 e dicembre 2016, 62.672 bambini e adolescenti sono approdati in Italia. Uno su sei non era accompagnato. Sono fuggiti dalle loro case, dai loro Paesi nativi, dall’Egitto, dalla Nigeria, dalla Siria, dalla Somalia. Sono scappati dalle guerre, da condizioni di povertà estrema, sperando di trovare un nido accogliente e sicuro, un nido fatto di amore e di calore che potesse in qualche modo sbiadire i ricordi terribili, quelli che non dovrebbero appartenere a nessun bambino.
Numeri come questi rappresentano una vera e propria emergenza e, educare diventa fondamentale. Pianificare uno sforzo coordinato e organizzato per integrare tutte le bambine ed i bambini migranti all’interno della società è di vitale importanza. Per debellare il razzismo è necessario costruire una cultura intorno alla parola “diversità”, una visione che la renda un valore aggiunto in grado di accrescere il livello di civiltà dell’intero paese.
Il concetto è quello di aituare i bambini a comunicare, sopratutto quando sono presenti barriere di natura fisica, psicologica o linguistica. Il miglior modo per arrivare al cuore di una bambina o di un bambino, il miglior modo per aiutare i bimbi a trovarsi e diventare amici è attraverso l’arte. La musica, il ballo, la recitazione, il canto, dipingere, sono tutte forme di espressione che parlano una lingua universale. Le arti ci permettono di mostrare la bellezza che è in noi e di scoprire e di vedere la bellezza nel prossimo.
Per questo venire a conoscenza dell’ esistenza dell’associazione internazionale Mus-e Onlus sul territorio fermano mi ha estasiata!

Si ispirarono al pensiero dell’etnomusicologo e pedagogo ungherese Zoltàn Kodàly che credeva nell’importanza della musica nell’educazione di ogni bambino quale strumento capace di plasmarci e renderci migliori.
Recentemente ho avuto il piacere di parlare con la vice presidente di Mus-e Italia Costanza Garrone, con la coordinatrice nazionale Rita Costato Costantini e con il responsabile ufficio stampa Carlo Pagliacci.
Mi hanno raccontato come in poco tempo Mus-e sia diventato un progetto volto a diffondere l’arte nelle scuole di tutta Europa e nel mondo. Oggi, più di 50,000 bambini, 450 scuole partecipano gratuitamente alle attività dell’associazione, dirette da 1,000 artisti, educatori formati da Mus-e. Questo diventa possibile grazie alle donazioni di privati, sostenitori del sogno di realizzare una società emblema dell’uguaglianza. In Italia sono 12,000 i bambini in età scolare coinvolti in attività artistiche ideate e create da Mus-e.
L’obiettivo dell’associazione è quello di continuare a crescere per dare a tutti i bambini la possibilità di diventare parte della comunità di Mus-e. Infatti, chi si trova in sintonia con la visione di Mus-e e volesse aprire una sede nella propria città, in qualsiasi parte del mondo è invitato a scrivere a [email protected] per avere informazioni precise e dettagliate.
Intanto vi lascio in compagnia di uno dei tanti video prodotti da Mus-e. La parte più bella è vedere i volti di bambini illuminati da sorrisi, è vederli giocare e partecipare, liberi di esprimere la propria creatività indipendentemente dal colore della loro pelle, dalla forma dei loro occhi, dalla lingua che parlano o dalla religione che praticano o meno. Sono amici, fratelli e sorelle, nel canto, nel ballo, nella recitazione, in un disegno.
A pensarci bene so di un discreto numero di adulti che dovrebbero lasciarsi contagiare da Mus-e. Sono quelli che costruiscono muri al posto di ponti. Ma ho la sensazione che il loro tempo stia per scadere. Un esercito di bambini spazzerà via l’odio con una pennellata d’amore e una sinfonia di sorrisi!
