I have always been able to schedule a day at home for work prior to the pandemic. These were productive days both to catch up and to project plan for the week ahead. They seemed quite normal in my weekly routine but now everyday at home is a new normal for all of us. The first week was settling in, second seemed a bit smoother, but what I did notice was the continual shuffle to the cupboard or fridge for snacks, no scheduled meal time and a lack of regular hydration. As I ended the 2nd week of WFH, I made a plan on the weekend to prepare on Sunday as I would for any typical work week. I washed and chopped my veggies, fruit and prepared yogurt in small containers. I made sure there was a healthy lunch to grab when I had a mid day break and filled a water bottle to have on my desk to remind me to hydrate. I realized these were the habits I maintained while at my office and shortly into this week I am feeling more settled and controlled. Most of us are creatures of habit and when these are disrupted, it takes us a bit of time to settle back into these routines. Even though we often think of the word routine as slightly boring, I was quick to recognize how much I needed it in my day to day work life and how effective it has been so far. I also recognized the advantage to long term work at home life is my ability to find small opportunities to get fresh air and a bit of exercise are more in my control on a busy day. I will hopefully have this ingrained as one more daily habit for when I do return to work at my “real” day to day office.
