If you feel nervous about going to your first yoga class, remember that everyone was a beginner once. You do not need to be flexible, strong or fit to begin yoga. Choosing from the different yoga styles and class levels can seem complicated, but most studios run beginner classes and beginner courses that are open to everyone. Some studios even offer free trial classes for new students.
How Do I Start Yoga?
Even the most advanced person in the class was once a beginner and had to learn the basics. There is no need to worry about being a beginner. If you feel nervous about your first class, it is a good idea to start from a beginner course or an introductory level that allows you to learn with other beginners in a supportive environment.
The variety of yoga styles may be confusing, but most classes are a mix of postures and breathing exercises, relaxation and sometimes meditation. Some classes include yoga philosophy or mantra chanting. Even more important than finding the right yoga style is to find a good teacher. Different teachers can teach the same yoga style very differently depending on their background and experience. It is also essential that you feel comfortable with your teacher.
Do I Need to Be Flexible for Yoga?
You do not need to be flexible to begin yoga. Even if you feel like the least flexible person in the world, a regular yoga practice will increase your flexibility, strength, and stamina. Yoga is not about how flexible you are or how amazing your yoga practice looks. The beautiful and inspiring yoga photos and videos on social media are usually made by people who have practiced for years, and the perfect yoga postures in those photos are the result of a lot of hard work. Everyone practices at their level, and yoga is not a competition.
You do not need a specific body type for yoga. Yoga is about feeling comfortable in your own body. If you have injuries or medical conditions, however, you should always tell the teacher so he or she can teach you safely and give individual assistance if necessary.
What Should I Wear for Yoga?
Wear something that is comfortable and that allows you to stretch. You do not need to buy expensive yoga outfits or designer yoga mats. If you are unsure about what to wear, ask the studio or the teacher for advice.
Most studios have yoga mats that you can use during class, but if you practice regularly, it is nicer and more hygienic to have your own mat. Yoga is usually practiced barefoot, so do not be surprised if the studio asks you to leave your shoes by the front door. Remember to switch off your phone before you enter the classroom.
Yoga is not about how flexible you are or how many postures you can do. Anyone can start yoga, and there are classes for all levels. Most yoga studios have beginner classes that are suitable for everyone. Many studios offer beginner workshops and introductory courses that are often the best way to get started on your path of learning yoga.
