As we move into the new year and people begin their New Year’s resolutions, it is important to examine every aspect of your life, including the people that you surround yourself with in order to achieve the goals that you set for yourself. Unfortunately, at times we surround or at least have people close to us who are not conducive to our goals and may even actively impede any potential progress that we may be making.

If this is the case, it is important that you work to identify these relationships and make changes as needed.

Take An Inventory

The first thing you want to do when you are working to cut out people in your life who you believe are not conducive to your attempted lifestyle change is to identify these people. Simply take an honest look at the people who you interact with regularly or are close with. You want to know what goals you are working to accomplish this year and if you believe that these people are in the way and affecting your ability to achieve these goals. These relationships may be toxic and be taking more away from you than they are working to help you.

Cut Out Toxic People

Toxic and parasitic relationships are something that causes big problems for someone in social situations and can get in the way of people’s goals. For example, if you are looking to stop using drugs or to cut out drinking out of your life but surround yourself with people who are constantly pressuring you to use these substances, it may be best to not be around them as often. You don’t need to fully discontinue all contact with these individuals but even just being aware of how much you are around them can help you commit and adapt to achieve your goals.

It is important to understand that not every relationship or friendship needs to be pushing you constantly, it is just important to surround yourself with people who have similar goals or are willingly supportive of your goals.

Start Fresh

If you have made it this far and have cut out the people in your life that were putting you or dragging you down and not helping you achieve what you are looking to achieve, chances are you may need to look for more people in your life that can help you. Now the problem is, where do you find these people?

Luckily, in today’s digital age, it is much easier to find like-minded people than in any previous time. By simply searching online for what you are looking for, you can likely find a meet up or just meet individuals with those who you are trying to associate with. This goes for nearly anything. For instance, if you are trying to get more active this new year, you can look online and find a running group or a gym buddy fairly easily. Likewise, if you are trying to get sober this year, there are tons of support groups and local treatment centers, like Indianapolis rehab, in place looking to help people.

Overall, making these changes in your life is vital if you are truly trying to make a number of changes this upcoming year and you don’t want to see stagnation. While some may not have to cut anyone out of their lives, others may have to find a whole new group of people to be around.
