In my opinion, prayers are our best source of strength. When patients know that God is with them, and He is in charge of when we go home to heaven, it brings peace and joy even going through a life-threatening disease, like cancer. It is important that patients should not act out of fear; instead, they should let their faith guide them during their care and help with decision-making at every step. I always encourage people to pray, and they will be given guidance from above to make the best decision and let the body heal. Our body is a gift from God, and it has the ability to heal itself when given the correct course of care. A constant dose of faith is needed to expel the fears and doubts that can be detrimental to a patient’s health and healing process.

Cancer is a horrible and terrifying disease. There is so much great information out there, but sometimes it is very difficult to filter out the noise. What causes cancer? Can it be prevented? How do you detect it? What are the odds of survival today? What are the different forms of cancer? What are the best treatments? And what is the best way to support someone impacted by cancer?

In this interview series called, “5 Things Everyone Needs To Know About Cancer” we are talking to experts about cancer such as oncologists, researchers, and medical directors to address these questions. As a part of this interview series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Dino Prato of Envita Health.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive into the main focus of our interview, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

My mother and father immigrated to the US from Italy. I was born in Rochester, upstate New York. To escape the cold weather, my family relocated to Arizona. I vividly recall my first day at kindergarten, where I was dropped off with a bag brimming with biscotti, unable to utter a single word of English. Growing up, I was surrounded by a loving and close-knit Italian family, with my grandmother and mother consistently praying for us and motivating us to employ our talents in the service of the Lord. Among three siblings, I am the eldest, with two younger sisters in my family.

My family had several financial difficulties during the early years of my childhood and youth, so I had learned the importance of hard work and prayers at a very young age. I went to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, for a premed undergraduate degree, majoring in biology with chemistry and martial arts as my minors. It was a small classroom environment with strong Christian principles, providing a perfect environment for me to enhance not only my knowledge but also my values. I was also involved in youth ministry and helped teenagers grow in their faith.

I was granted early accelerated acceptance to dental school, but after one year, I made the decision, against the wishes of everyone around me, to depart from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco. Instead, I chose to enroll in the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Phoenix. My motivation stemmed from a strong interest in exploring holistic approaches to healing the human body.

After completing my training and graduation, I opened Envita Medical Centers about 23 years ago. Back then, I did not have the resources to even rent an office space, so I would use my father’s small office space to see patients after 5pm. When everyone went home from standard multi-office complexes, I would work along with a professor from my university to help patients with chronic diseases.

Within a few months the parking lot was filling up at night because our patients were spreading the word about their successful recovery with our innovative treatments. Over the next few years, I needed to move to new office spaces every six months, as we witnessed a huge influx of new patients seeking an alternative approach to care.

I remember one of our initial encounters with a cancer patient who was concurrently undergoing conventional treatments for late-stage colon cancer at the Mayo Clinic. The prognosis was disheartening, as she was given a less than 20% chance of surviving beyond a year. The devastating news shattered not only the young mother but also her entire family. However, through Envita’s distinctive approach to care, she experienced remarkable progress and achieved complete remission. It has now been over 20 years since she entered remission. As an influential member of the community, her successful recovery has served as a source of inspiration for numerous other patients who have chosen to seek treatment with us.

With our continued growth, I felt the need to expand and started hiring more doctors and administrative staff for our clinic. In 2005, we built our first campus, and I started shifting my focus to research and development and the training of new doctors into our unique integrative precision oncology approach.

In 2008, I had the pleasure of meeting my wife, who is not only a brilliant and compassionate federal litigator but also dedicated to protecting religious freedom through her work with ADF (Alliance Defending Freedom). However, at present, my wife’s primary focus is homeschooling our four wonderful children — two girls and two boys — ranging in age from 7 to 13. As busy parents, we find ourselves constantly juggling their various activities, including soccer, dance, karate, and horseback riding classes, alongside their academic lessons. Thankfully, with the unwavering support of our family, I am able to wholeheartedly concentrate on driving Envita’s growth forward!

Today, Envita has over 200 employees with 21 doctors, pharmacists, chemists, and a custom compounding pharmacy. Our pharmacy supplies the latest custom compounded medications to not only our patients, but to 3,500 other doctors’ offices as well.

Despite facing numerous challenges, both financial and from regulatory agencies like the FDA, we have continued to grow. The Lord has protected and guided us throughout our journey and helped us grow into one of the leaders in the area of precision integrative oncology. I am a firm believer that God will continue to bless us in our mission to help patients.

In 2020, Envita achieved the distinction of being recognized as a center of excellence for cancer. This recognition was based on 3rd-party independent actuarial response data, which certified that our costs were 50 percent lower compared to conventional care. Moreover, our patients gained enhanced access to precision-targeted treatment options. Throughout our journey, we have diligently worked to overcome institutional biases, financial constraints, and technological barriers that hinder patients from receiving truly integrative precision-targeted care. Our comprehensive data showcases significant improvements in symptom scores for 88% of patients under Envita’s care, while experiencing 95% fewer side effects. It is worth noting that approximately 90% of patients who seek treatment at Envita had previously been receiving treatment targeting the wrong drugs, owing to the limited availability of precision oncology in standard cancer treatment centers.

Our strong desire to ensure that everyone has access to precision-targeted care has driven us to establish Envita Health. In the coming year, we are excited to introduce impactful healthcare solutions for both employers and families through Envita Health. These solutions have been meticulously crafted by doctors to empower patients with access to cutting-edge technologies while maintaining transparency in cost and eliminating network restrictions. Members of Envita Health will have the freedom to choose their preferred healthcare providers, utilize Envita Center of Excellence (COE) for treatments, and benefit from world-class navigation services to locate the most cost-efficient and precise care for their specific conditions.

What or who inspired you to pursue your career? We would love to hear your story.

When I was 19 years old, my aunt was diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer that had metastasized to her liver. She was like a second mother to me and lived across the street from us. As a family, we did everything we could to help her live longer. We sought the latest conventional treatments available in standard oncology while also accessing alternative cancer treatments in Mexico, but her hard-fought battle with cancer came to an end soon.

As our family gathered by her bedside to pray, something inside me clicked and I felt like praying for her by staring at the open sky. I went outside and prayed, and after I said my prayers, I noticed a large flock of birds flying overhead. In that moment, a deep sense of connection and purpose stirred within me, as if it held significance for my future. I sensed the guiding hand of God beckoning me — an indescribable feeling that continues to resonate within me to this day, particularly when I embark on my work at Envita.

Of course, then I was too young to understand that this was my calling to help patients outperform conventional options with precision-targeted treatments. Little did I know then that one day I would be running one of the largest integrative cancer centers in the country focused on precision care.

I have always felt God’s hand guiding and encouraging me to help people by transforming cancer care. No matter how big or established the current oncology space is, it only takes a David with a strong faith in the Lord to strike at a Goliath and bring a disruptive transformation to the industry!

To me, Envita is on a mission to bring healing and real hope to those in need. We utilize the latest scientific developments in cancer research to help potentiate outcomes. Every patient that walks through the doors of Envita is like family to me because I have seen my aunt suffer due to this disease. However, this time around, we are equipped with much better and smarter technology to help patients experience optimal outcomes. Though I am saddened about my aunt’s untimely demise, I try to look on the brighter side of this unfortunate event. It encouraged me to utilize my God given gift of serving people and transforming the broken healthcare system in America.

This is not easy work. What is your primary motivation and drive behind the work that you do?

My goal has always been to extend and save human life with better outcomes. I learned long back that often the technology in medicine does exist, but most people do not have access to it. If you ask people, “do you have good healthcare, they tell you they have a low deductible.” That is not good healthcare, but simply access to a standard of care, which is often outdated, especially in the areas of oncology and chronic diseases.

No one should suffer premature death due to limited access to precision treatments while being subjected to outdated, generalized care. I firmly believe that every individual possesses the right and deserves access to the most advanced technologies available to save their own life or the lives of their loved ones. Envita is committed to providing these essential tools, guided by the grace of God, to ensure that this becomes a reality.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now? How do you think that might help people?

Over the last three years, we have been working on a nationwide healthcare program for employers and families to increase access to the best technologies in precision medicine and drive down costs. We are very excited to have accomplished that and are now planning to launch it in the fourth quarter of 2023. https://www.envitahealth.com/

Additionally, Envita Medical Centers has developed a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-validated laboratory test called PathoDNA. This test serves as an advanced diagnostic for Lyme disease & co-infections utilizing next generation DNA sequencing with greater sensitivity and selectivity than ELISA/Western Blot tests. The current the two-step test, an ELISA immunoblot followed by a confirmatory Western blot, yields accuracy rates as low as 29% for acute Lyme disease and 75% for chronic Lyme disease. PathoDNA achieves accuracy rates of 98% for B. burgdorferi (the pathogen responsible for Lyme disease) and 95% or greater for other common tick-borne pathogens. With Lyme disease causing considerable confusion regarding both its treatment and accurate diagnosis, we firmly believe that this test will aid patients in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, thereby enabling appropriate treatment. We aim to have this test available to the public in 2024.

For the benefit of our readers, can you briefly let us know why you are an authority about the topic of Cancer?

I am the Founder and CEO of Envita Medical Centers, one of the largest integrative precision oncology facilities in the country, working in the area of cancer care for over 23 years. We have been finding ways to help patients respond to care even when they failed to respond to standard oncology options.

In the early 2000s, I helped build natural killer cell vaccines against cancers, where a patient uses their own immune system to fight cancer. This pioneering immunotherapy initiative was way ahead of its time, and even now we are continuously evolving in precision-targeted immunotherapy oncology care.

In 2016, I built a custom compounding pharmacy to help develop customized medications, aimed at overcoming multi-drug resistance in cancer. In 2019, I helped extend custom drug targeting designs for interventional radiology oncology through proprietary healthcare technologies. This year I have been working with our team on 3D tumor targeting using radiotherapy beads as small as red blood cells or rice grains with chemosensitizers to treat resistant regions of cancer. Envita has really moved way beyond standard chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation to help patients experience the true advantages of precision-targeted treatments.

Ok, thank you for all of that. Let’s now shift to the main focus of our interview. Let’s start with some basic definitions so that we are all on the same page. What is exactly cancer?

Cancer is a mutation of cells that aims to grow uncontrollably, evading the body’s immune system, which is its natural defense against diseases. These cancerous cells bypass the natural process of cell death and start spreading to other organs and systems of the body. This process of mutation and growth is constantly changing during treatment, as it works to evade the body’s immune system and treatments like chemotherapy drugs.

Today we aim to understand cancer via its hallmarks of its complexities that include genomics, transcriptomics, and immune profiling, to help provide much more precision-targeted treatments. Essentially the goal in cancer treatment and research today is to identify these cancer drivers in each patient for effective treatment or prevention of disease.

What causes cancer?

Most cancers are not caused by inherited genetics, instead they are triggered by somatic cell mutations brought on by a series of carcinogenic exposures from infections and chemical toxins, found everywhere in our daily life. In most cases, these carcinogens cause epigenetic changes responsible for cancer. Studies show only 5–10% of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic defects, whereas the remaining 90–95% have their roots in the environment and lifestyle (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2515569/). For example, a woman that may inherit a BRCA gene mutation may be more prone to breast cancer than someone who did not inherit that mutation. Metabolic factors, such as inflammation, glucose dysregulation and others linked to our daily lifestyle, exercise, sleep pattern etc., can also increase the risk of cancer. This area is also constantly evolving, and early genomic testing may be a great way to detect the disease in its initial stages, making remission much more likely.

What is the difference between the different forms of cancer?

Certain cancers are a result of tissue mutations, such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and the like, while others can be due to mutations in the cells of the blood, such as leukemia. However, cancers are heterogeneous, implying no two cancers are exactly alike and they have different markers, hallmarks, immune profiles, highlighting the need for different treatments even for patients with the same tissue type and stage of cancer. The reliance on basic biopsy or histology data as the foundation of current treatment models is rapidly becoming outdated, especially with the emergence of genomics, transcriptomics, immune profiling, and other critical factors. Depending solely on basic biopsy data alone fails to encompass the broader scope of information available and fails to leverage the potential offered by these advanced technologies.

The current drug approval model in the US, overseen by the FDA, has resulted in the estimation that out of 72 chemotherapy drugs approved, the overall increase in lifespan amounts to only two and a half months. This limited improvement is largely attributed to the flaws present in the current drug models and clinical trials. These models fail to fully consider the significant heterogeneity and uniqueness of each patient’s cancer. A more effective approach could be the utilization of the “n of 1” clinical trial (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3118090/) and treatment model, which focuses on the individualized factors specific to each patient, enabling the creation of highly personalized treatment plans. At Envita, we embrace this “n of 1” treatment model to empower our patients and achieve optimal outcomes. By incorporating more comprehensive information, including custom drug design involving both on-label and off-label or repurposed medications, we strive to offer advanced treatments that go beyond standard protocols. Unfortunately, many patients lack access to these technologies and often rely on standard protocols that may not yield the desired results.

I know that the next few questions are huge topics, but we’d love to hear your thoughts regardless. How can cancer be prevented?

“While there are no absolute guarantees for cancer prevention, taking proactive steps can help reduce the risk of developing cancer. It begins with embracing a healthy lifestyle, which includes following an organic diet that prioritizes high-quality fruits, vegetables, and quality proteins such as grass-fed organic meats. It is important to reduce consumption of foods and combinations that cause spikes in sugars and insulin levels. Additionally, practicing early detection and screening is crucial as it often leads to improved treatment outcomes. Methods such as whole body MRI and blood tests, such as Grail, can provide early detection. Minimizing exposure to common carcinogens, such as tobacco, pesticides, and environmental toxins, also plays a significant role in prevention. Improving sleep quality and balancing cortisol to DHEA ratios is essential. Building a strong immune system through the use of vitamin D, beta-glucans, mushrooms, and other means is important, as cancer is a disease related to faulty immunity. It is also important to work with a skilled healthcare provider to address chronic infections and eliminate them. Regular exercise, breathing exercises, and improving oxygen delivery to tissues are critical for enhancing mitochondrial health. These measures aim to reduce chronic inflammation, minimize exposure to toxins, strengthen immunity, and slow down the aging process. Additionally, prayer can be an essential aspect in bringing peace to our personal lives.

How can one detect the main forms of cancer?

The best way to detect cancer in the modern day is to use a whole-body MRI and then order circulating tumor cells data from a basic blood draw to screen for any form of cancer, utilizing Grail Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Technology. The key is early detection, which allows better utilization of precision treatments for optimally managing the diseases, and even curing it in certain cases.

For example, instead of mammogram you can use precision tests like https://www.provistadx.com/videssa-breast-cancer-blood-test, which is 98% accurate. It avoids the unnecessary exposure to radiation and can pick up early signs of breast cancer, which may be missed in a mammogram. These precision tests can be used to help patients with early detection, avoid invasive surgery, and aggressive chemotherapies.

Our objective is to integrate a comprehensive range of screening and diagnostic technologies into our healthcare plans. These vital technologies are currently absent from standard care practices primarily due to cost constraints and internal politics, in my opinion. Insurance companies may not show interest in investing in disease prevention, as the average member tends to change insurance or jobs within five years. Consequently, insurance companies often transfer the associated risks to other insurers or payers. It is important to acknowledge that financial institutions are not inherently designed to formulate healthcare plans that prioritize the holistic recovery of their members. Their primary focus is on ensuring that the multi-billion-dollar cancer industrial complex continues to generate revenue.

Cancer used to almost be a death sentence, but it seems that it has changed today. What are the odds of surviving cancer today?

Cancer deaths have reduced in the populations where early detection was possible with advanced screenings, like mammograms. For instance, breast cancer is removed in the early stage, but studies show that approximately 30% of women diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer, eventually develop recurrent advanced or metastatic disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16368868/, so it is important to run circulating tumor cell data to reduce chances of such recurrences. Certain prostate cancers tend to be slow growing, making them treatable, but most late-stage cancers still have poor prognosis. The US cancer death rate, adjusted for population age and size, has decreased by just 5% since 1950 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4535307/ ).

Outside the addition of immunotherapies like PD1 inhibitors that can provide some help, current offerings in standard oncology have still not made cancer a manageable disease. The lack of implementation of precision oncology could potentially be one of the crucial missing links in the standard of care today. Other factors like insurance companies lacking billing codes to cover precision oncology, certain institutional biases, absence of training in molecular targeting, and supply chain models for medications, also contribute to poor prognoses with conventional treatments.

Can you share some of the new cutting-edge treatments for cancer that have recently emerged? What new cancer treatment innovations are you most excited to see come to fruition in the near future?

Envita has been actively involved in combining the latest developments in conventional medicine with advanced alternative and natural therapies. We utilize a powerful combination of personalized medications to go straight to the tumors using a catheter the size of your hair. We base our treatments on detailed genomic analysis to identify the hallmarks of each patient’s individual cancer and precision-target their cancerous cells, while bolstering their immune system to help them progress towards a holistic recovery. We treat cancer by utilizing genetic precision in identifying actionable targets and minimizing the use of chemotherapy, where possible. Our metronomic dosage of genetically targeted chemotherapies, personalized immunotherapies and proprietary interventional radiology procedures, have proved to be extremely beneficial for our patients, many of whom were refractory to standard treatment options. You can find out more about some of our proprietary treatments and our innovations in oncology here:

https://www.envita.com/conditions/cancer/chemotherapy
https://www.envita.com/conditions/cancer/immunotherapy

Healing usually takes place between doctor visits. What have you found to be most beneficial to assist a patient to heal?

Our integrative approach shines in this aspect of assisting patients with their holistic recovery. After chemotherapy has had its desired impact on the cancerous cells, we use natural integrative IV agents to flush the chemo agents and their toxicities out of the patient’s body and help their immune system to recover. We aim to bolster their immune system, which is crucial for greatly reducing side effects, typically associated with standard maximum therapeutic dose untargeted chemotherapy. At Envita, we utilize precision-targeted options including metronomic dosage of chemotherapy, which is why our cancer patients experience an optimal response to care. Many of our patients have been able to hike, exercise, and enjoy a good quality of life while going through our proprietary treatments like GTFC™ (Genetically Targeted Fractionated Chemotherapy). When precision-targeting is utilized, patients feel the difference, and our internal data showed our patients had 95% fewer side effects with our targeted treatments.

From your experience, what are a few of the best ways to support a loved one, friend, or colleague who is impacted by cancer?

Secondly, proper nutrition also plays a crucial role in influencing each patient’s response to care. Remove sugar and all refined and processed foods out of your diet and start nourishing your body with nutritious food, exercise, breathing exercises, and important supplements like mushrooms and beta glucans, to enhance immunity.

What are a few of the biggest misconceptions and myths out there about fighting cancer that you would like to dispel?

One of the biggest myths that I would like to dispel is that major well known cancer centers provide different treatments. The truth is, they all really offer the same standard of care, which is typically determined by the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) guidelines. The only way patients can access certain treatments going beyond the standard of care is when they participate in clinical trials offered in different institutions or they have access to novel varieties of radiation equipment. Typically, insurance billing codes limit patients’ access to newer and better technologies in cancer treatments and precision care is often denied. The 150-billion-dollar cancer industry is mainly driven by big pharma, hospitals, and the insurance network, and people cannot really access unique and innovative treatments unless they get out of this system.

Thank you so much for all of that. Here is the main question of our interview. Based on your experiences and knowledge, what are your “5 Things Everyone Needs To Know About Cancer? Please share a story or example for each.

  1. Cancer is a complex disease influenced by various factors, including genetic mutations, metabolic processes, chronic infections, immune system dysregulation, and mitochondrial dysfunction (related to oxygen pathways). The majority of cancers are not solely attributed to inherited genetic factors but rather arise from somatic mutations and epigenetic influences. A well-balanced diet, healthy lifestyle choices, sufficient sleep, and stress reduction techniques play significant roles in supporting our overall health, as cancer development is closely linked to metabolic factors. Eliminating excessive sugar intake and processed foods from our diet can greatly enhance our immune function and improve our ability to combat diseases, including cancer.
Barbara, a cancer patient who sought treatment at Envita, initially suspected that her cancer had a hereditary basis due to her family history. However, through our precise testing methods, we determined that she did not possess the specific genes associated with her diagnosis. Instead, our investigations revealed the presence of severe chronic infections that were closely correlated with the development of her disease.
  2. Screenings play a crucial role in safeguarding your health, so it’s important not to let fear hinder you from undergoing a simple screening that can potentially save your life. Rather than avoiding the issue, take a proactive approach by initiating screenings at an earlier stage. Consider incorporating additional blood tests and stool tests into your screening regimen, as they can provide valuable insights into your well-being. But don’t rely solely on conventional cancer screening methods like mammography, as they may not be the most effective means of detection, with a tendency to miss 20% or more of breast cancers during screening. While doctors often employ these tests as a starting point, they may overlook several breast cancers and other types of cancer. Instead, consider investing around $600 in a comprehensive full-body MRI to examine both the breasts and the entire body for any signs of growth. Additionally, explore advanced screening technologies such as Grail Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Technology and other methods that allow for whole-body screening to facilitate early diagnosis. If a tumor is identified, it is worth considering screening for circulating tumor cells to gain insight into potential metastasis before opting for surgical removal. Prioritizing the targeting of the immune system before tumor removal can prove beneficial, as tumors contain essential antigen information that can play a vital role in triggering a systemic immune response, thereby aiding in suppressing the cancer. It is not uncommon for doctors to rush into surgery without considering these pre-existing metastatic factors, which may already be present in circulating tumor cells.
Pam was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer but after testing for CTCs (circulating tumor cells) it was found that she had more evidence of spread. This information allowed for a better treatment plan prior to removing the cancer and helping to achieve a long-term remission for the patient. This is not common practice in oncology but ask and find someone willing to work with you as more information is better than less.
  3. Treatment should involve monitoring genomics, transcriptomics, and immune profiling at the tumor and or at the circulating cancer cells. This can help to custom-develop a much more customized treatment plan for each patient.
Envita’s 2020 internal data showed that 90% of patients where on the wrong drugs and chemotherapy. Access to more detailed information about each patient’s cancer helps to reduce the dose of required chemotherapy for impacting the cancerous cells, which in turn helps with protecting the immune system from weakening. In addition, get chemotherapy to the tumor as most chemotherapy given intravenously may only get 7% to the tumor and direct treatment to the tumor is 100% while helping to spare the healthy cells from side effects.
  4. Most cancer should have multiple forms of immunotherapy built into the treatment including integrative adjuvants. Our immune system kills 10,000 pre-cancerous cells a day and getting and keeping our immune system strong is essential. Most patients have low grade chronic viral or other infections. Make sure you are properly tested and treated as this plays a role in your holistic health and recovery.
Linda was a patient being treated at Envita for a cancer diagnosis. With our advanced testing we were able to diagnose multiple infections, along with toxicities and environmental factors that could be potential causes or contributors to their cancer, as well as their overall deteriorating health. Once these factors were identified and addressed, and the immune system was fortified with adjuvant therapies, we began to witness a comprehensive recovery in the patient.
  5. Make sure you get a true second opinion. Most cancer centers treat cancer using the same NCCN guidelines and that is not really a true second opinion. Instead, look for precision integrative options so you can get more information about your cancer, what caused it, and how to bring your body back to optimal health. Going to the depth of your cancer and enhancing your immunity is crucial because these factors can make all the difference between life and death.
Sandy received a diagnosis of late-stage colon cancer when she was just 39 years old, and her prognosis indicated a survival chance of only 20% to 30% beyond one year, even after undergoing standard treatments following the NCCN guidelines. Seeking alternative options, she visited two reputable cancer treatment centers in the United States, both of which proposed similar approaches. Determined to explore further, she sought a true second opinion, ultimately turning to Envita for their precision-targeted treatments. Remarkably, Sandy has been living cancer-free for over 20 years now, thanks to the treatment she received at Envita.
