Starfish on a beach

Summer is not only a fantastic time to unwind, but it is also an opportune time to be highly productive. Our tendency during the summer is often to kick back and put a lot of stuff on the back burner. True, we are better able to do so during these middle months, but too much downtime can cost us. I, for one, like to avoid overindulging in the temptation to over- relax during the summer because the extra time I have during the warmest season also gives me a multitude of additional hours to get things done.

At the end of the day, as with a lot of other things, it all comes down to balance. Your summer schedule should involve a solid mix of both relaxation and productivity. Do you struggle with finding that balance? It can be challenging at times.

Because we have now entered the last month of the summer, here are some straightforward guidelines that may help you make the most of your remaining time:

  • Identify your desires in terms of vacation and downtime. Do you want to take any trips? Work shorter hours? Sleep in longer in the morning? What is your desired schedule? And what can you realistically afford and squeeze in?
  • Figure out what tasks and projects you hope to complete. Are there things that you want to accomplish at work or at home but never seem to have enough time for? Can you easily complete them in August? Why not create a master plan and start knocking them out one at a time.
  • Make a list of new experiences that you want to engage in. Do you want to try something different? Maybe there’s a summer hobby or activity that you’ve been considering. Perhaps this is your opportunity to venture out and try a unique restaurant or venue. Are there any musical artists or events coming to your area this summer? You’re in charge of what you bring into your life. Why not bring some freshness in?
  • Combine all of these items and categories into your summer roadmap. What can you realistically accomplish with your remaining time? Score different items in terms of their importance and then start scheduling them out on your calendar.
  • Make them happen. There is no time like the present and you’ve got a full four weeks to take advantage of. What are you going to do with all of those hours?

Summer is really such a magical time. If we use it wisely, we can catch up with friends and family, go on new adventures, learn new things, and get a lot done. With a little brainstorming and planning, you can wrap up August feeling both refreshed and accomplished.
