- Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
JK: I’ve always been a non-stop, never-sit-down or relax kind of person. There is never a dull moment in my day typically. The first thing I do is get ready – before my kids wake up. I brush my teeth, wash my face, put my @treStiQue makeup on and get dressed. Workout clothes, if I can, or work clothes if I’m going directly to a meeting. I’m fast. That’s why I built my company around a 5 minute makeup routine, I guess. I’ve always had limited time and this need for speed.
TG: What gives you energy?
JK: Fitness! I have always relied on my workouts – I was such a tomboy growing up, always playing soccer. For fun I love to snowboard, wakeboard, paddle board and hike.My workouts keep me energized, balanced and stress free.
TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
JK: My phone is unfortunately, a part of my body at this point. It even goes into the shower with me at times which is very unhealthy! My 2020 goal is to definitely create more downtime, at least on Sundays or 1-2 days with no phone if I’m on a family vacation.
TG: How do you deal with email?
JK: In all honesty, I check it constantly throughout the day. I never have any more than 15 unread emails. My secret is to keep them unread if they need to be responded to at a later date.
TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
JK: Call one of my best friends or family members. I’m terrible, I really don’t like talking on the phone, but I make a conscious effort to stay in touch as best I can! Plus I can do that while I’m moving around.
TG: How do you prioritize when you have an overwhelming amount to do?
JK: I create lists, lots of lists. I have a note pad on my computer, I always create invites in my calendar as reminders for big things and then I also have a notebook on my desk that I hand write things in. Going through that and writing by hand actually helps me to prioritize. Of course, crossing things off my list makes me less stressed.
TG: What’s your personal warning sign that you’re depleted?
JK: I was so sick during my first pregnancy that my whole immune system is still down. Whenever I get stressed or depleted, I unfortunately don’t listen to the warning signs. I’m always going full steam until I just drop, which never used to happen to me. It is totally my body’s way of saying stop + rest, which I really need to listen to!
TG: How do you reframe negative thinking?
JK: I’ve always been strong and confident in myself and my decisions, even as a small child. I always speak internally to myself with kindness. But if I’m in a negative mindset about work or life, I go on a date with my husband, have a glass of wine and just talk it out. He’s very rationale and very positive.
TG: Tell us about a small change you have made in your life to improve your sleep. What did you do, how long did it take until it became effective, and how you sustain this habit?
JK: I started an aromatherapy routine. After I take my vitamins, I put doterra ongaurd, deep sleep and lavender and sometimes clary sage on my neck, wrists and feet. It smells heavenly and lets me relax. I take deep breaths and get in the mindset for sleep. It’s only 5 minutes, but it does help to calm me and its really the only time I’m not moving!
TG: What was the biggest turning point in your life?
JK: It was leaving my corporate job and starting treStiQue. It was huge a worry, yet such a relief at the same time to have the courage to follow my dreams. Its never easy, but looking back, it was worth it.
TG: What’s your secret time-saver in the morning?
JK: I always lay out my outfit, pack my lunch and check my calendar the night before so I am ready to bolt out the door!
