On the latest episode of The Thrive Global Podcast with iHeartRadio, Thrive Global founder and CEO Arianna Huffington sat down with motivational writer, international speaker and author Gabby Bernstein to talk about everything from spirituality, meditation and self doubt to her phone habits, social media and finding happiness.

Bernstein’s mother taught her to meditate when she was young, and she was raised with a strong spiritual foundation. She told Huffington that “when we connect to inspiration, or joy, or a place of intuitive action,” that is the “the spiritual presence of us.”

Bernstein often uses the term “spirit junkie,” and defines it as being intentional about your “conscious pursuit of love over fear.” It also means being able to bounce back from obstacles. “There’s actually a chapter in the book that says, ‘Obstacles are detours in the right direction,’” she said. “I’m less concerned about how perfect my spiritual practice is but I’m much more focused on my comeback rate—how quickly did I return to love?”

Bernstein also explained her belief that “we are spirits having a human experience.” She told Huffington that belief means living her human experience, but “having a metaphysical perspective on my experience of this world,” is something that has given her the faith and freedom “to really live without the need to feel like I need to control my circumstances.”
