It is hard to find that balance between growing up and still wanting to have fun like a kid. Making the decision to spend money on something you want versus saving is always a tough decision. Do you take that vacation now or wait until the kids grow up?
You may be facing these questions in your life, regardless of age. Just this week I was talking car prices with a family member that just turned 70. He is looking for that classic midlife crisis vehicle as many describe (yes, he is a little old for the term midlife crisis) and I had to ask him: Why didn’t you do this 20+ years ago?
And the reality is, he could have afforded it back then but he just didn’t want to spend the money. I am definitely not saying blow all your cash, there has to be some sense of fiscal responsibility. Although one thing is for sure, you’re not taking the money with you when you depart this world, so enjoy some of it along the way.
But the issue today is, it’s not so easy to get into that super low riding sports car at 70 years old. And your reflexes are not what they once where so that idea of blazing around corners in your new nimble sports ride only exists in one’s mind.
My advice to younger people is this: If you can afford to do it, do it when you’re young and healthy.
Go ahead and have that quarter life crisis or midlife crisis, just have it early! Ok well, maybe don’t go off seeking to have any kind of crisis but my point is don’t wait until you’re 70 to treat life like it is fleeting. The clock started ticking the moment you were born, we all know this.
You won’t feel as good in your 30’s as you did in your 20’s. Your energy levels at 50 won’t be as good as they were in your 40’s. This is all common sense, we all know it, but we bury it. Maybe we think it’s a long ways away or maybe we just think it won’t happen to us.
But it happens to everyone.
How many times have you heard “live every day like it’s your last!” yet we just blow it off. We really have to plan for tomorrow but we still have to live in the now.
If you won’t live everyday like it’s your last, at least wake up every morning and acknowledge life is fleeting. And maybe live like it’s your second to last day, but go LIVE!
