American first responders and their families are dealing with largely unprecedented stress as they tackle the epic challenge presented by COVID-19. Now, they’ll get the chance to rest, recharge, and recover in Hilton Hotels across the United States. Hilton is donating up to one million hotel room nights to frontline medical professionals together with American Express, which is helping finance the program.

This generous initiative from Hilton, a partner of Thrive Global, means that first responders needing a place to sleep, or to isolate from their families, will get a welcome respite. They can stay at Hilton hotels for free from next week until the end of May. To implement the program, the hotel company is working closely with 10 key associations, including the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American College of Emergency Physicians, and American Hospital Association, representing more than 1 million healthcare workers.

“During this crisis, we have seen so many examples of medical professionals working in the most challenging circumstances, sacrificing their own needs for the greater good. They truly are heroes,” Christopher J. Nassetta, Hilton’s President and CEO said. “We are honored to extend our Hilton hospitality to them during this difficult time.”

Specially trained Hilton employees will be staffing the hotel, and all have received additional training on relevant health and safety measures to safeguard their own and their guests’ well-being. Rooms and common areas will continue to be sanitized using industrial grade cleaners and updated cleaning protocols. 

“Our medical workers, who are courageously and selflessly serving on the frontlines in the coronavirus crisis represent the best of who we are,” Stephen J. Squeri, American Express’ Chairman and CEO added. “We’re honored to provide the heroes in our communities a place to rest, recharge, and help keep their loved ones safe during this time.”

In response to the donation, Dr. William Jaquis, M.D., President of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said the rooms will provide much-needed relief for the thousands of medical staff enduring long hours under challenging circumstances. “Knowing that there is a safe, clean, and comfortable hotel room waiting for you at the end of a long shift can make all the difference in the world right now,” Dr. Jaquis said. “The kind of compassion and caring that Hilton and American Express are offering has never been more welcome.”
