Maybe you’re similar to me and you grew up with real life heroes as parents who raised you. My father is a retired police sergeant and my mother is a retired nurse. They were both able to pursue their passions, become everyday heroes, be recognized for their courageous actions, provide for their family, and even retire early. These types of people are what shape our communities and inspire us to be better versions of ourselves. But they aren’t the only people who have the power to be heroes.

Growing up, the majority of us were most likely asked: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Police officer, military soldier, nurse, veterinarian, and pilot might have been some of the ambitious, heroic answers on that long list of childhood dreams.

Some of us went on to follow those childhood dreams. Others chose a different route. In college, when committing to a major as a freshman, it felt like a decision to benefit your social life at the time but it would actually be a leading factor in what you would do at least to begin your career.

If you didn’t choose to follow a career path that led to a more obvious heroic role, there are still so many ways you can be an admirable, everyday hero for your closest loved ones, your mentors/mentees, and the environment around you. Title and occupation completely aside.

The list is endless but here are a few simple daily ways you can channel your inner superhero and contribute to the benefit of all:

Being completely present

Life is busy, it always will be. Our lives are cluttered with technology, to-do lists, social media, and other distractions. Because this crowd of nonsense is constantly fighting for our attention, the most valuable thing you give someone you love is your undivided presence and commitment to that time together. A lot of life is also uncertain so concentrate on what is certain, the present moment.

Teaching others how to care for the planet

It’s becoming more practical to be a conscious consumer. Teaching your kids, friends, or anyone you interact with how to reduce our footprint on this planet is a small favor to return to Mother Earth. People will start to come to you with their questions on what ways they can improve their environmental impact and introduce a stronger connection to nature. People will look up to you for contributing to something bigger than yourself.

Self-care

Believe it or not, one of the noblest and thoughtful things you can do for others is to take care of yourself. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s actually selfless. Adopt this mindset so you’ll be able to present your happiest and healthiest self to everyone you encounter. This type of behavior is radiating, attractive, and inspiring enough for people to follow in your footsteps and embark on their own self-care journey.

Volunteer

Another way to be an everyday hero is to make a positive difference in the lives of others and especially others in dire need. Branch outside of your circle and volunteer for a cause that means a lot to you which contributes to the greater good of our society, planet, or animals. You have a special skill set that’s unique to you as an individual. Lean into that.

What you do for yourself and others on a daily basis is what makes the world a better place to live. Don’t underestimate what your potential is to be an everyday hero in the smallest of ways. Pay the heroism forward!
