By staying home, our planet has seen several remarkable changes, like seeing fish in the Venice canals, or reduced pollutions in the mountains

While we may be abiding by rules and regulations during this temporary crisis, our planet’s overall well-being is long term. Here are sustainable solutions you can practice in effort to impact the earth for the better, right at home.

Plant Trees

One of the best ways to reduce individual carbon footprints is to plant trees. Trees are natures greatest filter, and every year one tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon. Although one way you can do this is by planting a tree in your yard, a more effective way is donating to an organization, such as Forest Founders, who will plant multiple trees on your behalf. By signing up for a $10 or $20 monthly membership, Forest Founders will plant 10 or 20 trees and have already planted more than 56,000 trees.

Between yearly wildfires and deforestation, it’s important we maintain our planet’s trees and treat them with the respect they deserve. The nonprofit plants all trees in conjunction with the National Forest Foundation and Trees for The Future.

Volunteer

Through EarthDay.org, you can sign-up to volunteer and be provided with options on how you can get involved. This is the first year Earth Day is being coordinated digitally, but still volunteers are needed. Whether you’re a teacher informing your students on how to garden or you want to educate your community on how to better recycle, there are solutions you can find from home to get involved.

Anyone can volunteer and make a difference. It can be from picking garbage on your nightly walks through your neighborhood – from a safe distance from others – or petitioning to ensure your community to have proper recycling requirements. No matter what you decide, there are active ways for you to volunteer to be an advocate of this planet.

Speak Up and Pledge

Although it seems tough right now to focus on anything but the health and safety of our loved ones, our planet is still going to be fighting for its survival for years to come. One thing you can do on Earth Day is make a promise to yourself. You can pledge to vote Earth. Your voice matters and making a promise to yourself to continue any work toward protecting our planet, even after Earth Day, is a great way to be accountable for your actions in the future.

No matter how you decide to celebrate Earth Day this year, it’s important to remember there are always ways to get involved, even if it is from your couch.
