While sitting at home, many people may be bored as they watch the next episode of the Netflix show that they have decided to binge that day. If you are looking for something to do during this time, there are a lot of ways you can help those on the frontlines while still practicing social distancing. 

Sewing Masks

While they may not provide as complete of protection as the N95 masks, many are working together to stitch up masks for doctors and nurses as their supplies deplete. These masks help to free up more masks for those who have the most risk. This outpour of community service started when the CDC suggested that healthcare providers could take to tying bandanna’s around their faces as a quick substitute for the masks. Many sharing online patterns as to how to create the masks online and craft stores helping to provide the scrap fabrics to help create them. These masks are bring built to be able to withstand high heats needed for necessary sterilization and the violence that industrial laundry machines. 

Delivery or Courier Services 

Many people have turned to delivery services to help out the community. Some are delivering food, and others are delivering groceries to those who may be considered high risk and are worried about leaving their homes. Since a lot of restaurants have now closed to only take out services, they are relying on these services to keep their doors open at the end of the pandemic.  

Checking on Your Neighbors 

Something as simple as checking up on your neighbors, especially the elderly, to make sure they are stocked on the things that they might need can also go a long way. If they have a dog that needs to be walked or possibly helping with any chores that they might have, if they are worried about personal interaction, you could even call to see if they need any groceries picked up and leave them on their doorstep. Communication during these times can also be helpful, just chatting through a door can be seen as useful.

If you go to idealist.org, you can find a whole slew of volunteer and action opportunities, many of them being ways that you can help virtually. More and more non-profits are working toward innovative ways that they can continue to run their programs as they have to limit gatherings and in-person services.
