I’ve been having some great conversations on virtual platforms and learning how to overcome my own fear of video calls.  I’ve completed my first live interview and had a lot of fun, but the most challenging thing in the last few weeks is motivation!

The general desire or willingness for doing something each day.

Everyone I talk to mentions they feel as if they are on a roller coaster ride.  One day we are up, and the next, we are down.  Just getting up in the morning seems to be challenging with no alarm clocks and sporadic schedules.

Everyone is commenting on motivation, or lack there of.  It is becoming a topic that creates connections between strangers and starts new conversations. We are all trying to be busy, organizing to-do lists around inside activities.  It seems like the right thing to do.

I’ve begun to think this is a great time to hit the reset button.  Taking a deep dive on what is important and prioritizing our personal and professional life.

That’s just it…everyone I’ve connected with agrees, life as we knew it before COVID-19 will never be the same. The experience is changing everyone to one degree or another and we are all navigating a new sense of normal. It is a great opportunity to reevaluate where we are and where we’d like to be in the future.

I’ve really taken a hard look at my “dream list,” or you may call it your bucket list.  The things I’ve promised myself I would do before  finding a little grass shack on the beach.

The list has been defined and refined in the last few weeks and I’m sure there will be more edits, deletions and revisions before it is considered complete.  It feels good to think about the future with possibilities.

While I daydream, one of the things I’ve been doing is giving myself permission to practise a little self-love.  Thinking about a number of crazy things where the sky is the limit encourages a sense of freedom and hope.  I’m giving myself permission to go with the flow, experience the ups and downs, embrace the lack of motivation and enjoy the hiatus.

What about you?

As I connect with colleagues, friends and family, we all agree that while we are all feeling a little disconnected, we do feel much better when we have some sort of routine.  It makes us feel productive and at the same time creates a sense of accomplishment. Holding ourselves accountable to a predetermined list also makes the days go by quicker. It reinforces the simple things in life.

It creates a sense of normal.

So, as we continue to modify our daily schedules, here is an ad hoc list of things to consider as voluntary isolation continues:

1) Get up at the same time very day; make your bed
2) Meditate before your feet hit the ground
3) Exercise daily
4) Shower and get dressed as if your going to work
No PJ’s or housecoats for the entire day…
5) Eat meals at the same time while trying to increase the
amount of leafy greens, vegetables and fruit. Choose
    healthy snacks
6) Organize at least one virtual call with a friend or family member
This is really important if you live alone; we need the human
    connections
7) Play board games, do puzzles, take an on-line course or
simply read – we need time away from the TV or computer
8) Go to bed at the same time
9) Journal…start a separate book for this experience and include
“gratitude” as part of the entries, close the page in the book
just before you hit “lights out”

I’ll bet, we are all trying similar coping techniques as the days turn into weeks. Things that make us feel grounded and connected with ourselves and our communities.

In the meantime, I’m going to look for a little motivation just by daydreaming and practising self-love. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.

We are all taking it one day at a time.
