You are out shopping for a new pair of shoes. You come across two pairs that you equally love, however, one pair of shoes donates a portion of funds to feed local families in impoverished areas, and the other does not. Which one would you be more likely to choose?
In today’s world, consumers are actively seeking out companies that support social responsibility. What exactly is social responsibility?
Social responsibility is when a company chooses to support and positively benefit the environment or society through its product, services, or actions. Or, in other words, when a business strives to make the world a better place.
Jason Kulpa – a philanthropist and entrepreneur, believes in the importance of giving back as an individual and a business owner. Though it might be easier for big corporations to make their empathetic mark on the world, it’s essential for small businesses to strive for social responsibility and to do the right things for the right reasons, as well. Below, Kulpa shares four ways for this small business goal to be possible:
Way #1: Focus on the local impact
When cash flow is tight for a small business, it might seem impossible to spare any additional funds for the greater good of the world. However, if you think small or local, there is an opportunity.
Local newspapers, schools, sports teams, arts programs, and charity fundraisers are always looking for small sponsorships. Consider using your marketing funds for the betterment of local impact through these types of aids. It is an excellent way for you to brand yourself in a positive light.
If there are absolutely no funds to spare, you can contribute other attributes such as your involvement and time in community outreach. Look out for pre-existing charity events to join in on or create one of your own. It’s common for small veterinary offices to offer free neuter and spay clinics once a month for community pets or those who can’t afford regularly scheduled clinic services, for example.
Way #2: Promote good community behavior
There are multiple groups in every community that support and promote the prevention of dangerous activities, such as drunk driving. Open your office as a free meeting place when these groups gather or display marketing support for your clients to see.
Another means of support that benefits your business mission is to volunteer to be a board member for a non-profit charity.
Way #3: Support environmental standards
Add a shade of green to your business model by supporting environmental standards inside and outside of the office. Rather than having a single trash can, encourage your employees and customers to do more for the planet by providing recycling and compost options, as well.
Are you looking to purchase a company vehicle? Go with an electric car option that will help your community and world breathe better.
Way #4: Offer an academic scholarship
Education beyond high school is getting more expensive every year. Market your business and support education by offering an academic scholarship through your company.
Get creative and develop a unique method on how a student can obtain your academic scholarship, such as through community service hour competitions.
