Nearly 45 percent of Americans are affected by poor sleep, according to National Sleep Foundation. But a cozy bedroom design as well as comfortable bed can go a long way towards giving you ample rest, says “Property Brothers” co-host Jonathan Scott in an interview with Thrive Global. The other half of the Scott twins shares tips on how to create functional bedroom spaces that result in quality sleep.
“It’s worth investing in a quality mattress. That’s the anchor piece of furniture in your bedroom,” says the 39-year-old home designer. “Personally, I have the Stearns & Foster Reserve Collection in my bedroom and it allows me to get the best sleep.”
During the summer months, Scott advises using “hot” accent colors such as fuchsia, yellow, orange and aqua, while keeping the room grounded with bright whites, deep rich blues and sophisticated gold/brass accents. In this video, he shows how these tips are brought to life. As temperatures cool down, it’s also key to transition your bedroom design to create a sense of calm and comfortableness.
“When you switch to the fall, it’s nice to make your bedroom a little cozier and that means changing your curtains; putting an area rug; or placing some throw pillows in your bed,” Scott tells Thrive Global. “And consider going with some warm blues or deep browns, and add some faux fur. Some brass accents can also add some fall/winter cozy feel.”
Here are Jonathan Scott’s bedroom-design tips for fall.
1. Shades of Autumn: Add the feeling of a crisp fall day with burnt orange and terra cotta side tables and room accents and throw pillows.
2. Cozy Layers: Add warmth by layering tonal and textural, plush rugs and oversized knit throw blankets. Wool, felt and cashmere are our fall favorites when it comes to materials.
3. Dark & Stormy: Create the feeling of a fireside retreat by grounding the room in smooth chocolate and smoky charcoal tones and add visual warmth with brass and copper accents. Should feel warm and inviting but not actually dark.
So what’s the key difference between summer and fall bedroom designs? “As the holidays roll around, people are tired,” says Scott. “It becomes more important to have a space where you can unwind, relax and recharge. Every time my family comes to visit, they always sleep on my mattress. They all have their own Stearns & Foster mattress to sleep on.”
A relaxing bedroom environment boosts your quality of life, says Scott.
So stay organized and don’t turn your bedroom into an office so you can keep
the stress away.
