Adjusting to Transitions

So far, 2020 has proven to us that life is always full of transitions and full of changes — whether they are expected or not. Many of us are feeling the global wake up call, many of us are reaching our breaking points, and all of us are transitioning into a world that will forever be changed. While these trying times are bringing about unanticipated challenges that are far out of our control, and you may find yourself facing the toughest time of your life, experiencing some or all of those feelings mentioned above. What can you do to cope and adapt? Focus on the things you can control, focus on the things that are meaningful to you, and focus on doing whatever it is that fulfills you (pro tip: that doesn’t necessarily mean doing ‘productive’ tasks).

During times of transition and times of crisis, occupation has the power to transform lifestyles and ultimately transform wellbeing. While for years OT has made its name in helping people get better, OT also has a distinct role in keeping people physically and mentally well, and it is this power of occupation that shows exactly why occupational therapy deserves a prominent seat at the health and wellness table. Whether it’s in corporate wellness, community and higher education settings, or through private practice, this is the time when we occupational therapists can step up to the plate to be at the forefront of helping people cope with and adapt to not just the forced transitions of the global pandemic, but all transitions people experience throughout their lifetime.
