3 thoughts on personal development

I have been fortunate to work with some talented people.  It’s so important to absorb their knowledge.

So, I would like to share 3 thoughts and good habits from some people I respect.

Thinking Big

First of all, personal development is about not limiting ourselves.

I will relate a story from my days as a business consultant.  My specialty was corporate accounting and finance.  At the time, I was working for a man named Joe.

Joe and I were in charge of establishing a new business unit for a multi-billion dollar company.  One day Joe was addressing the employees at a group meeting and said:

“Think big, we are only limited by our thoughts.”

And that quote applies to both you and me.  We are only limited by our thoughts.

Follow Joe’s advice.  Daydream, think big and establish your vision for future success.  Don’t be limited by your thoughts.

Getting Better Every Day

Next, personal development is about continuous improvement.

I had the pleasure of working with a continuous improvement consultant in one of my permanent work assignments.  At the time, I was in charge of the finances and accounting for a mid-size manufacturing company.

The consultant’s name was Rhett.  And Rhett had a saying I still remember to this day.

“We want to be better today than we were yesterday.  And better tomorrow than we are today.”

So, listen to Rhett.  Think about what you can do better today.

Execute, Execute, Execute

Finally, an important aspect of personal development is execution.

Thinking big and continuous improvement is great.  But, success is also about getting things done.

I worked for a gentleman for several years.  His name was Bill.  And Bill had a saying that I remember very well.   It sums up the concept of working smart to be productive.  Bill used to say…

“Always ask yourself if you are working on the right things and if you are doing those things the right way.”

That phrase has stuck with me for a long time.  And I often ask myself those 2 questions no matter what I’m doing.

So, try and follow Bill’s advice and work smart.  Make sure to work on the right things and do them the right way.

Remember that your skills and habits are your greatest asset.  To summarize, here are 3 thoughts on personal development from my mentors.

  • Think big – You are only limited by your thoughts
  • Get better today than you were yesterday and better tomorrow than today
  • Work on the right things and do them the right way
