I believe bringing more fun and more play into work and fusing the two together will, in the near future, massively impact employee happiness, drive creative ideas, and teach people to think outside the box. It’s a terrific vehicle for creating learning that sticks. Having fun while learning drives lessons deeper which equals greater results in any endeavor. Without the joy element, you are driving your people to departure and your business to an early death. With this in mind, here are my top ten quotes on play drawn from past and present leaders in business, philosophy, sports, and science.

  1. “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato (philosopher)
  2. “When you are having fun and creating something you love, it shows in the product” – Tom Ford (designer)
  3. “Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.” – Michael Jordan (athlete)
  4. “There comes a time when you ought to start doing what you want. Take a job that you love. You will jump out of bed in the morning.” – Warren Buffett (business magnate, investor)
  5. “The question you should be asking isn’t, “What do I want?” or “What are my goals?” but “What would excite me?” – Tim Ferriss (entrepreneur)
  6. “I’ve never really understood why so many people separate work and play – it’s all living. We should be able to have fun at work and bring out the best in each other.” – Richard Branson (business magnate, investor)
  7. “Gamulations power up our ability to engage wholeheartedly with different challenges, think outside the box, and translate our new-found skills into measurable results in the workplace.” – Leena Patel (entrepreneur)
  8. “This is the real secret of life — to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” – Alan W. Watts (philosopher)
  9. “Education should learn from the positive side of gaming – reward, accomplishment, and fun.” – Sebastian Thrun (innovator, computer scientist)
  10. “Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story.” – Casey Stengel (baseball manager)
