Feedback is vital to any individual worker’s success. This has always been true, but in times like these, consistent feedback becomes even more of an imperative. And not just the critical, “here’s what you could do better” kind. While your team navigates work and life in the new normal — they may be grieving on a personal level, managing an increased workload, managing uncertainty about the future — it’s important that they are recognized for the ways they’re showing up.
If you’re stretched thin or managing a considerable amount of stress yourself, remember that giving feedback can take two minutes a day (or less)! “Reserve time at the end of each day to provide specific, positive feedback for good work (not just great work),” Sabina Nawaz, a global CEO coach, writes in Harvard Business Review. This small effort can go a long way toward easing some of their discomforts and anxieties during these trying times. Not to mention, gratitude promotes stronger relationships, according to research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. And when team members feel more connected to you, they may be better equipped to deal with challenges and innovate.
Here are a few Microsteps than can help:
Make a point of reaching out to every member of your team once a day. Even a quick hello will let your colleagues know you’re thinking of them, which helps them feel valued. You can also ask how their workload is feeling — since remote workers are harder to diagnose with burnout, this practice can help you keep an eye out for its signs.
Before your next one-on-one, pause to reflect before giving feedback. If you’re stressed or rushed, you’re more likely to deliver feedback without compassion or empathy — even if that’s unintentional.
Dedicate a few minutes at the end of each day to giving feedback. In trying times, people’s need for good news and appreciation only increases.
