I hear some people, especially busy people say, that mindfulness is not for them. Or what they mean is that they prefer other forms of mindfulness rather than just sitting still. They talk about running, cycling, walking the dog or playing the piano.

But I believe that “Sitting Still” Mindfulness is for everyone.

And if you think it is not for you ask yourself why.

It does not mean anything is wrong with you.

But become curious about the reasons you cannot sit still in silence for a few minutes with your eyes closed.

When I first heard about mindfulness I was immediately intrigued by it.

I remember I read a quote in one book: “You look within. And what you find is even more exciting than the outside world.”

“Hmmm. I imagine that if I close my eyes all I will see is the darkness,”- I thought.

But that was not the case for me and “sitting still” mindfulness became my daily ritual, my guiding compass, my personal stress and happiness barometer.

Here a few simple steps that can help you to embrace the process of sitting still on purpose.

STEP 1. Make sure you sit comfortably, your spine is straight, your feet are firmly on the floor and your chin is a little bit up.

STEP 2. Close your eyes. Ensure no one can disturb you for a few minutes. Relax.

STEP 3. Ask your beautiful, wonderful self “how are you, YOUR NAME”, focus on yourself.

“Hello YOUR NAME,”- you say. “How are you doing?”

STEP 4. And then just listen in silence intently.

There is high probability that you won’t hear anything straight away apart from your noisy mind urging you to open your eyes so some patience will be required. But after a while you will be able to hear your very familiar self saying hello back to you. He or she will be well surprised. You have been so busy focusing on anything and anyone but yourself.

STEP 5. Practice a few minutes to listen to this voice within you, connect with it. It has all the answers. It is a treasure that is often left undiscovered within us. Don’t miss it.
