There is a LOT of advice out there on resumes, profiles and career transitions. People view things differently, so stop trying to please everyone and OWN your career transition.

Ask 6 different resume “experts” for feedback and you will likely get 6 different sets of comments. They could all be right, but you can’t follow all of their advice.

The same goes for interviews, salary negotiations, networking, career discovery, and degree paths. ULTIMATELY, your career transition is up to you.

There is no step-by-step guide to a successful career transition because the hiring process still revolves around people making decisions based on their “personal lens.” People see things differently based on their own life experiences.

I didn’t get selected for my “dream job” a few years ago because they thought I wouldn’t be able to adjust to their culture out right out of the Army. That was the hiring manager’s “personal lens.” (Note: In hindsight they were probably right)

The best advice? Network with professionals in your desired industry. Follow the pieces of advice that both worked for them AND resonate with you.
