Are you part of the 2%?
I recently read in an article that around 2% of the world’s population has the ability to operate on less than 6 hours of sleep a night. There were even some famous people listed (Jay Leno, for example) touting that they go on blissfully with as little as 4 hours of sleep per night. For the overwhelming majority of us, however, this just isn’t the case. For most of us without late-night talk shows and massive car collections, it is decisively around the 8 hour mark.
But how many of us are living our days in a state of trying to negotiate that biological reality or convince ourselves and others that we can (and will) be effective with less? Do not be fooled. We need this rest and there is a reason for its design. And nothing in our post-post* modern culture will change that. Rewire will be on a pretty major campaign to help organizations and individuals get back to embracing the idea of proper rest. Without it, Lizard Brain takes over and everything from decisions we make to our physical health gets compromised. The correlation between poor sleep and a whole host of other detrimental conditions is overwhelming. We will be drawing attention to these studies and their application at the personal and corporate level. In the meantime, get your needed rest. It is not likely you are in that rare percentile that doesn’t absolutely need it.
