We have all been trained to believe that once we enter a new year, we need to start attacking a new set of goals, but what if we should instead be continuing on with the old goals that we set the year prior? Finish out the old before we usher in the new?
I created a vision board for last year which really enabled me to stay focused and make a lot of progress towards the things that I hoped to achieve in 2024. It’s hanging in my office right next to my desk. I glance at it all the time and celebrate the little wins along the way and take stock of the things that I have not yet achieved.
When I started thinking about my goals for 2025, I realized that I am still on the path towards many of the things that I started in 2024. It’s not that I hadn’t been working on them, it’s just that I haven’t completed them yet. Therefore, I ended up duplicating my 2024 vision board for 2025 with a few minor adjustments. I feel that it’s always best to begin your goal setting for the new year with a recap of your previous goals and accomplishments. Often, you are still heading in the same overall direction.
It’s been fun to look back on the past twelve months and figure out what I have accomplished. I am well on my way towards a lot of the goals that I’ve established. There are a couple of major ones that should wrap up this summer, and then there are one or two others that I need to place more emphasis on. Still, my major objectives have remained largely the same which is actually a good thing. I’m consistent.
You should revisit your goals in a similar manner as well to get your year moving in a positive direction. Begin with reflection. It allows you to see what you have accomplished and where you have fallen short and how you can improve.
Next, take the time to reaffirm your priorities. Did they shift or do they remain largely the same as mine did? Check in with your values as well and ensure that everything still aligns. You’ll have to adjust your overall strategy as needed so that you can better meet your goals in 2025 and get the results that you want.
All of this focus can help you become more motivated. Sometimes, we are a bit sluggish after the holidays and may have a more challenging time getting back into the swing of things. When we revisit our goals, we can break them down into smaller tasks and milestones which will help us break free from our lethargy.
From there, you just have to build momentum. Lay out your timeline and continue to take steps forward with a solid plan. Check in with yourself from time to time and remember that you can achieve anything that you put your mind to. Here’s wishing you a happy and productive 2025!
