So far I’ve eaten poorly, missed the gym, not gone to bed at a reasonable hour, and already watched too much Netflix and it’s only day 2.
I guess some would say my start to 2018 has been a total failure, I might as well chalk this one up as a loss, but don’t worry I know 2019 will be my year fo sho!
For most people, there is this notion that the new year means they must go from being a borderline alcoholic, and contender for professional food eater during the festive period, to a saint who only eats greens, works out daily, and drinks eight glasses of water (all the while I’m still struggling to write an 8 instead a 7 in 2018). The reality is, approximately 80% of all resolutions fail by the second week of February.
2017 is behind us, for better or worse it is gone. Just because the date has changed doesn’t mean you need to punish yourself because you slip up on your new years resolution. The notion that we need to change, that we need to be a ‘new/better’ version of ourselves is one that should not be dictated by the calendar.
It’s been a hectic period, if you’re anything like me, you’re probably exhausted from the past week. Why add stress to an already stressful/exhausting period?! Instead of chalking this year up as a loss, or hating on yourself because you didn’t live up to your resolutions, how about instead of “new year, new me”, new year, better me. You’re great, don’t change just prioritise your well being.
If you haven’t already, take the time out to focus on you, and what you want for yourself and out of your life. Plan on being more accountable to yourself by checking in every 7 days and evaluating the actions you have taken in the previous 7 days to achieve your goals and better your life, or get an accountabilibuddy (yes, it’s a thing). If you make a little progress every week, you will be closer to you goals. Your actions don’t have to be life changing, they can be as simple as reading a book, meditating, or saying no to things you don’t want to do.
Will you achieve all your goals this year? probably not, but you can make a conscious effort to better yourself daily/weekly/monthly without the time constraint. Don’t feel bad should you fall back into old habits, just be accountable, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start again, regardless if it’s a new year, new week or new month.
You’re great, you don’t need a ‘New Year’ to be a ‘New Me’, instead just focus on being the best you, you can be.
Thrive, don’t only survive,
YG.
