If you are working directly with people, you simply cannot fully serve them unless you understand them on a deep level. Understand their strengths, their weaknesses, where they come from, what they aspire to become. You should be able to almost feel them in your gut. This allows you to connect and help them transform, help them to move to the next level in their lives, closer to their dreams, so they feel powerful and strong and capable of making those dreams come true.
How can you make such a deep understanding?
It couldn’t be more obvious.
But as with everything obvious, somehow we tend to ignore it.
Dive In Deep
Our ideal client is someone we can truly understand. However, to discover what it is we connect through, one needs to look deep into their own soul.
So here is a great exercise that I used. Assign some time to think about your life, contemplate what decisions and events brought you to where you are now. Record the major events, milestone, discoveries, from the time you were born to now, decade by decade, or even break it down further into 5 year chunks. Use bullet points if suits- it does not have to be a novel.
As you start seeing your life story, you are likely to see some patterns too. How were you as a child? Are you still showing the same traits, or did something happen that changed the way you are were? Look closely at your early childhood- a lot of your amazing gifts might already be showing then.
What about your teenage years? Was it easy or was it hard for you? Who and how affected your growth?
What about your twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, wherever you are now.
To me this was a huge eye opener. I could see my natural gifts as if for the first time (although they were within me all the time). I also saw what made me hide some of these gifts, and that those events were actually much less significant, than they felt to me at the time.
I saw my wins, my failures, my ups, my downs, my tragedies and my dreams come true.
It was probably the most empowering exercise I ever did, regarding personal development.
Analyse
Then there is part two. I looked at the best clients I have attracted to date, and thought about what I know of their personal stories. I started recognising patterns that resembled my own. I saw very clearly how those past events create the common grounds where we connect, without even discussing the actual events once. It is what those events transformed us into.
And this knowledge, this awareness is an extremely powerful tool in identifying your ideal client. As understanding where you come from and what made you who you are, gives you clarity on what type of person you attract and what might have happened to them that allows you to feel them so deeply.
Now, you can understand the personality traits, and with that comes the awareness of their aspirations and the ability to make their dreams come true.
Another confusing puzzle of your client avatar just fell nicely into it’s place.
