“Your beliefs and thoughts are wired into your biology. They become your cells, tissues, and organs. There’s no supplement, no diet, no medicine, and no exercise regimen that can compare with the power of your thoughts and beliefs. That’s the very first place you need to look when anything goes wrong with your body.” -Christiane Northrup

Such smart advice for those of us who are suffering from disease, depression, anxiety, abuse, etc.

The medical establishment has been proving that the mind can heal the body for over 50 years. So can negative beliefs about our health actually harm our body? Do our negative memories from past traumas keep us in the throes of living in past-tense instead of present-tense? There’s medical proof that it does. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we listen to what we are saying to ourselves

Examples:

  • What are we saying to ourselves when someone is mean to us, or hurts our feelings? Are we telling ourselves that we are worthless?
  • What are we saying to ourselves about our physical appearance, our weight, or our physical characteristics?
  • What are we saying to ourselves about healing, if we’re sick with disease?
  • What are we saying to ourselves about our past choices, our mistakes, or our hardships?

We need to start listening to our self-talk, and we need to turn any negative thoughts AROUND.  We must put a stop to all the hurtful things we are telling ourselves. Because like Christiane says, “Our thoughts are wired into our biology. And it’s the first place we need to look when anything goes wrong with our body.”

I’ve endured many traumatic experiences in my lifetime, and just the other night there was an episode on Dateline NBC that triggered a PTSD attack. I hadn’t had one for years! Memories that I thought I had healed from, rose to the surface and bubbled over me like hot lava from a volcano. It terrified me and made me realize that there are certain areas that I thought I had overcome…  but obviously haven’t. Instead I avoided certain traumas to numb my pain.

We can’t continue to treat ourselves with such negativity, and we can’t swallow our issues or pretend they don’t exist, because they will most certainly keep popping up until we learn to deal with them head on. Causing pain, AND sickness (illness, disease, obesity, etc.)

Our self-talk is so important, and unfortunately, I think for many of us we go throughout our days without consciously becoming aware of what we’re telling ourselves. And although it will take some dedication from our part to stay “in-the-moment,” it would be well worth it for us to start listening to ourselves.   Even going so far as keeping a small journal in our purse or pocket to take notes on any negative thought patterns. Because I believe, whatever we say to ourselves holds the key to unlocking the door of self-discovery and to our healing (mind and body).

We humans endure a lot of pain in our lifetime, and we need to learn how to release it in a healthy manner. That starts with turning our thoughts around. We gain strength when we speak to ourselves in a loving and kind manner. Negativity and self-pity will eventually destroy us. That kind of thinking not only hurts us, but it hurts our children, grandchildren, and our friendships. We can’t think that way for long before our thoughts start leaking all over our human relationships.

Before ending this article I want to ask that until we’ve healed, let’s make sure we are lifting our sisters and brothers up. Let’s support, nurture, and help each other. It’s so important to see how divinely amazing our species is. And I’m not talking about doing that in an egotistical way. I’m saying we must do it in a mature way that is full of wisdom, humbleness, light and love.

I pray that we are able to listen to our self-talk and learn from it in order to heal ourselves once and for all. That the discoveries within the depths of our souls, will teach us that we are nothing other than the little child we once were. The little girl or little boy who felt safe, secure, and full of endless possibilities.

“Sit down as a little child, be prepared to give up every preconceived notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abysses nature leads, or you shall learn nothing. I have only begun to learn content and peace of mind since I have resolved at all risks to do this.”  -Thomas Henry Huxley
