More times than not, I often hear people who are trying to make a career change or they want to take on more responsibilities, say “I don’t know where to begin.”

In the newest episode of my What’s Next! podcast, I interview Ron Carucci, who shares the four things that successful leaders have all done, and how you can position yourself for that success as well. He refocuses our thinking on leadership training, self-development, and a true understanding of diversity and, more importantly, diversity of thought. Ron also talks about some of his new ground-breaking research on honesty.

The key to self-development in leadership is the impact you have on other. After a ten-year long study that included more than 2,700 leaders, Ron discovered that choice, context, breath and the connection between people are the four things that the most successful leaders did consistently in order to create the most impactful influence.

Choice: Being Confident in Great Decisions

Great leaders are those who are comfortable enough to stick the landing and are confident in making hard choices. They understand the greater good of the organization and the decisions that would most likely work.

Context: Knowing Your Organization

Leaders who thrive in an organization are contextually intelligent. They have a clear understanding of why things are done the way they are. They also have a greater sense of adapting to their work environment before imposing their knowledge without being thoughtful about why.

Breadth: Connecting Organizational Dots

Executives develop breadth by broadening their exposure to the full organization, taking assignments across disciplines, and paying particular attention to linking organizational seams.

Connection: Developing Trusting Relationships

Not only do great organizational leaders know how to bring people together but they prioritize their connections based on those they could help. They focus on the people they can help, not those they can get something from.

Overall, the way Ron shapes our thinking about training, self-development, and understanding diversity is invaluable to those looking to learn how to create truly diverse communities and support a thriving company culture helmed by true leadership.
