“I am a weak man.”
When you have the opportunity to ask some of the most interesting people in the world about their lives, sometimes the most fascinating answers come from the simplest questions. The Thrive Questionnaire is an ongoing series that gives an intimate look inside the lives of some of the world’s most successful people.
Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Shane Smith: Whenever possible, have a swim and a steam/tub. It focuses my mind on the day ahead, cleans out the cobwebs, and makes me feel better about the debauchery that might have happened the night before.
TG: What gives you energy?
SS: Making things. I love the process from ideation to completion. But especially the completion part.
TG: What’s your secret life hack?
SS: Don’t drive. Ride your bike whenever possible. Changes everything.
TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
SS: High-functioning addiction. Sometimes when I am weak. I am a weak man.
TG: How do you deal with email?
SS: Poorly. If a day passes they go into the ether, promoting rage and disconcert on the other end of those emails.
TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
SS: Nap or meditate. Give my mind a rest.
TG: When was the last time you felt burned out?
SS: Years ago. I think my stress gland is broken. As long as I am swimming, napping, biking, and steaming, I can deal with all and sundry.
TG: Share a quote that gives you strength when times are tough.
SS: Just please let me be healthy. The rest I can deal with.
