“I’m a little pencil in the hand of a writing God, who is sending a love letter to the world.” ―Mother Teresa
There are several reasons for the current growing intolerance and conflicts globally. Here are some of them. People are becoming impatient. They want immediate results. They lack patience and perseverance. They fail to empathize with others. They try to prove their point right rather than looking at the points from others’ perspectives. They want to resort to short cuts. They want to win their case through win-lose, not through win-win.
There are several causes of growing intolerance and global violence. The basic ones include scarcity of resources, a threat to one’s position or authority, perceptions, ego, miscommunication, use of gut rather than head and heart, irrational thinking, superstitions, and supremacy. When some sections of people is oppressed for a long time, it leads to conflicts. Hence, understanding the root cause of the conflicts helps resolve them amicably. At times, the fundamental forces create violence in the name of their religions. Remember, no religion preaches violence. All religions emphasize tolerance and brotherhood. Then why there is violence in the name of fundamentalism and regionalism globally?
We must create a space to accommodate others. Let us be tolerant as intolerance has no place in the history of any religion and any part of the world. If you want to change society, you need citizens who are highly committed and dedicated. Hence, let us build a global society of citizens with universal brotherhood and fraternity to achieve our ultimate objective of global peace, prosperity, and stability.
Mahatma Gandhi and Non-Violence
The person who puts up with an attack is stronger than the person who attacks. The person who has the endurance to bear pain is stronger than the person who inflicts pain. The person who pioneers non-violence is stronger than the person who practices violence as Mahatma Gandhi rightly remarked, “Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong.” Hence, it is desirable to preach and practice non-violence than violence.
Love Your Mother but Don’t Hate another Person’s Mother
Love your mother but don’t hate another person’s mother. As your mother is precious to you, another person’s mother is equally precious to him/her. As your race, religion, region, language, ethnicity, culture, and community are precious to you; they are equally precious to others.
People must learn to empathize with others to make a difference in the lives of others. We need empathetic leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Dalai Lama; and religious leaders like Jesus, Buddha, and Muhammad to achieve global peace, prosperity, stability, and security. Remember, what Mother Teresa said when asked what you can do to promote world peace: “Go home and love your family.” As charity begins at home, let us promote global peace by loving our families and empathizing with others first.
Achieve ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is One Family/Universal Brotherhood)’
We must take a pledge to promote fraternity and universal brotherhood. To inculcate universal brotherhood, we must create a feeling that the entire world is one family. In India, we call it Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (From “vasudhā”, the earth; “ēva” = indeed is; and “kutumbakam”, family;) is a Sanskrit phrase which means “the world is one family.” Additionally, Indian Vedic literature believes in universal brotherhood and peace. It supports strongly in peace and prosperity.
Soft leadership helps unite people of all creeds, religions, races, and communities into one platform. It helps greatly to unite people globally into one platform. It helps convert the world into one family.
When we treat the entire world as one family, all the conflicts in the world will be resolved amicably. When we think that we are the brothers and sisters of the world, all problems in the world will be resolved. The differences usually arise in the world when we don’t treat others with respect. The differences arise when we look at differences, not commonalities.
Hatred doesn’t have any place in the world. Love is the only way to connect with the world. It breaks all barriers including cultural, racial, religious and community barriers.
We are all the branches of one tree. The root is one. The world is our root, branches are the nations and leaves are the people. Let us appreciate that we all have originated from one place and we all belong to one family. Hence, the whole world is one family. We are separated by regions, nations, and borders. People remain the same at the core level. The children are born innocent but the environment brings them up as per their faiths, regions, religions, and nations. Hence, let us focus on bringing the children with a global mindset with a universal brotherhood to achieve the ultimate objective of global peace and prosperity.
