As part of our new section, Thrive Library, in which we discuss books that have inspired us and given us strength and wisdom, we’ll be sharing reading lists from people all over the world. We know that books can significantly change our lives. In Thrive Global CEO and founder Arianna Huffington’s words, “It’s impossible to imagine a thriving life without books.”

In a Facebook post on New Year’s Eve, former President Barack Obama continued an important tradition from his presidency, sharing his favorite books and music from 2017. The former POTUS remarked that he had “some extra time on [his] hands this year to catch up.”

The diverse list spans multiple genres, from political, dystopian fiction to biography. Here are the 10 books Obama enjoyed most from the past year:

  1. The Power by Naomi Alderman

  2. Grant by Ron Chernow

  3. Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond

  4. Janesville: An American Story by Amy Goldstein

  5. Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

  6. Five-Carat Soul by James McBride

  7. Anything Is Possible by Elizabeth Strout

  8. Dying: A Memoir by Cory Taylor

  9. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

  10. Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward

He also added a little something extra this year: “*Bonus for hoops fans: Coach Wooden and Me by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Basketball (and Other Things) by Shea Serrano,” to which Serrano replied on Twitter:
