As stated by famous philosopher Plato “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.

If you are passionate about music, don’t hesitate to follow it just because of your age.

As for me, I am a 35 year old woman and I started learning piano at the age of 33 and trust me I am happier now. Before taking the decision I was very skeptical about it, just like thousands of other people of my age.

I always used to love the tunes of piano and tried many times to learn it but I could not gain the courage to start it due to my age.

If you are also in a dilemma about whether to follow your passion or not because of your age here are some tips that you can take to finalize your decision.

Know what actually is stopping you

In my case, there were a lot of things that stopped me from pursuing my dreams. I was hesitant to start something at that point.

A lot of questions started gathering in my mind like what if people mock me?

Should I spend my time and money on something which I know I could never gain the ability to do really well?

I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has faced such situations.

Where a lot of people give up for not being able to find an answer for such questions, I decided to go ahead with my passion.

The love for music helped me overcome the difficult phase.

It definitely takes courage to start something new at this age but trust me it feels great once you listen to your heart.

Talking to other adult beginners I have realized it is never too late to start learning something new that you love.

 Look for an ideal mentor

Mentors play a vital role in our lives and that is why it is crucial for you to find a teacher who is experienced in teaching adult learners.

This is because adults face a lot of challenges while mastering physical playing skills which is easier in case of young students.

Fortunately, adults grasp the ability to read music quickly. If you want to start your journey as an adult learner you must take out time from your responsibilities without being guilty.

Set your goals

You need to decide whether you want to be a solo performer or you want to be a part of a group.

Adult beginners mostly prefer to be a part of a group. They aim to make music with others.

Still there are learners who actively wish to participate in solo performances. Some of them are still working on their stage fear and nervousness and some are struggling to become a true solo performer.

Utilize your skills and experience

The main difference between matured beginners and children is that matured beginners have professional and life experience.

For instance a retired engineer can utilize his mathematical problem solving skills in the music lessons to understand lessons better.

Enjoy its benefits

Once you finally overcome your fears and gear up for your lessons you will notice a drastic change in your lifestyle eventually.

It doesn’t really matter which instrument you choose to play it can

  • Reduce your stress
  • Increase your concentration
  • Makes you happy
  • Gives birth to a sense of achievement

For me my piano lessons have brought positive changes in my life and I am sure you will also not regret if you say yes to your passion.
