Speaking from experience, I know that most business owners eat, breathe and live everything about their business on a day-to-day basis. When you run your own business there are no set hours, there’s no 9 – 5 stability, only a 24/7 workload. I’m sure I’m not the only one that has worked all through the night fuelled by coffee and the desire to get shit done. Where does the motivation for being a small business owner come from? Does it come from a deeper place, maybe it’s even in your DNA?

I’ve read a fair bit about Entrepreneurial DNA and time and time again I’ve read that “you either have it or you don’t”. To put it simply, your Entrepreneurial DNA is who you really are as an entrepreneur; it identifies your strengths, weaknesses and attitudes as a business owner. Someone that has very strong Entrepreneurial DNA will have the curiosity and originality necessary to challenge accepted norms, and will be able to quickly solve complex problems in a constantly changing playing field. Does this sound like you?

Let me just say that I never saw myself as an entrepreneur. I think many people say they were born to be an entrepreneur but that’s not my personal experience. I just didn’t feel like it was a calling, and I didn’t wake up one morning and decide to be an entrepreneur, it’s something that kind of happened over time. I was always the employed person, the person with a paycheck every month. I liked the security of corporate but I got older and my children grew up I just wanted greater flexibility and I wanted to do something for me, something that wasn’t going to benefit a big corporate, something that was going to benefit myself, my family and the people around me. so, I wouldn’t say I was a natural entrepreneur, I just fell into it and got good at it.

Does this make me any less of an entrepreneur than others that were born with this calling in life? No, of course not!

Being an accidental business owner is something to be proud of. There was no calling from birth or innate desire to run a business but somehow the planets aligned and everything fell into place. I’m sure many of us have probably had to learn on the spot, but that doesn’t mean we don’t possess Entrepreneurial DNA. I would actually argue that we have proved ourselves more! We’ve adapted, overcome and improvised through a myriad of challenges that we never thought we’d have to face and we’ve come out the other side stronger and wiser. That’s why I’m proud to say I fell into my business by accident.

I am an accidental business owner and I wear that badge with honour!
