Here is today’s story of managing Hashimoto’s thyroiditis from one of our subscribers in my “How To Heal From Autoimmune Diseases Without Meds” Summit Series. Hashimoto’s is the most common thyroid disorder affecting 14 million people in the United States and occurring more often in women than men. January is National Thyroid Awareness Month! Thank you Barbara for sharing your story of determination and resilience. Let the healing continue!
Hi Pirie,
I’m appreciating the autoimmune summit you’re hosting. Thanks for the great work you’re doing. My story is not nearly as dramatic as some of the stories I’ve heard so far from your speakers and their clients. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s 11 years ago. My TSH was almost 4 and my antibodies were over 100. The functional medicine doctor I was seeing at the time strongly recommended that I start to take amour thyroid, but I resisted. I started reading and listening to every expert I could find. My blood work showed evidence of the disease, but I had no typical symptoms – no hair loss, no fatigue (in spite of being a compulsive exerciser), etc.
These are the changes I made to support my thyroid: 1. Gave up all gluten. 2. Started taking iodine or consuming sea vegetables. 3. Had all mercury fillings removed. 4. Had testing and chelation for heavy metals. 5. Avoided soy, dairy, and most sugar. 6. Meditated almost every day. 7. Started taking additional supplements to support my immune system and microbiome.
My TSH is now just under 10, but my antibodies have been greatly reduced (below 60). I still have no symptoms that I’m aware of. I feel healthy in spite of the numbers showing up on my blood work. I’m still resistant to taking thyroid hormones, even though three different holistic doctors have tried to push me to do that.
I registered for your summit because I am always interested in new ideas to support my thyroid without pharmaceuticals. I just don’t want to buy into the mindset of needing these drugs. And I certainly don’t want to support the pharmaceutical industry in any way. Thanks again for offering this great summit. Happy New Year.
