Some people like gaming or gardening, I enjoy making up new words and acronyms. If they make me feel good, I figure they might make others smile too. So, in our lead-up to the first-ever World Mental Fitness Day on Thursday April 10, when b.l.o.b emerged I was amused! Standing for “Brave, Loving, Optimistic Being” – it’s one way to represent what nurturing your mental fitness may yield. I think it suits this complex, chaotic, and unpredictable thing called life. By comparison, pursuit of something too specific or rigid may lead to problems like perfectionism and close-mindedness, and on some days finding your elusive ‘sweet spot’ for productivity and attentiveness is as challenging as folding a fitted sheet into a perfect square.

Really, aren’t we just blobs of water and stuff? Which, when you think about it, makes ‘blob’ a strangely appropriate way to describe us humans.

Mental Fitness is about togetherness, meaning, resourcefulness, resilience, and wellbeing; and how these elements support your journey towards (or in, if you’re fortunate) contentment and fulfilment. If you’re unsure how to begin boosting your mental fitness, perhaps the acronym serves you well – if you were a brave, loving, optimistic being, or a mix of the three, would it make you feel a bit better? If your answer is yes, is there anything you could do just a little differently today to be braver, more loving, or optimistic?

Please join us on Thursday April 10 in acknowledging World Mental Fitness Day, in whichever way serves you best. Even if it’s just taking 10 minutes to boost your mental fitness somehow…Together, we can uplift humanity!
