Have you ever tried to force yourself to compose an innovative idea or solve a puzzling dilemma? It is futile effort, but when we relax and make some space, it is amazing how many inspired thoughts bubble up. That’s why giving yourself permission to take a break is an essential ingredient to creativity.

Unfortunately, there is a misguided notion that breaks are a distraction, yet slowing down, resting and playing is such an important piece of your overall well-being. Time away from work, the routine or the current task at hand allows us to redirect our focus, increases our attention and ultimately becomes a new source of energy. The path to creativity and connection is in the play time. What’s yours?

My space between is all about travel. Between the lines of where we are now, and our future goals and dreams may be a joyful journey of discovery and inspiration.

One of the most magical aspects of travel is the thrill of experiencing a new place in the world, learning a unique piece of history or just coming around a corner and taking in the view of a gorgeous vista.

Exploring a never-before-seen locale, tasting new foods, walking fresh paths and tuning into a particular culture- this is where I find the moments to get energized, inspired and creative.

And when you master the delicate balance of exciting experiences and rest- the expansive possibilities are endless.

My latest “break” took me to Southern France on a leisurely river cruise up the Rhone on a Uniworld cruise. An opportunity to wander small villages, meander through miles of wine country, visit local olive mills, and sit in village cafes was just what the doctor ordered to completely invigorate me -mind, body and spirit.

One of the finest features of the Uniworld cruise line is their belief that travel has the power to impact the world positively. This is a beautiful part of Uniworld’s programming and is evident in many of their MAKE TRAVEL MATTER  offerings. Excursions that give guests time to learn about other cultures, build bridges through empathy, and support the preservation of local heritages is all part of the mission.

Some of the sights, sounds, tastes and smells that accompanied me on this journey up the Rhone River from Arles to Lyon includes viewing the landscapes that inspired Van Gogh in Arles, dining with a real count in his castle, wine-tasting on hillsides and through the vineyards of Provence, and leisurely strolling through Roman ruins. Every day was a feast for the senses.

But for me, no trip to France is complete without spending some time Paris. Revisiting favorite museums and neighborhoods and people watching in the park.

Here’s a picture of my favorite sculpture in the Luxembourg Gardens. I find this spot one of the most creatively inspiring places in Paris!

Whether you are traveling far from home or just sitting and breathing in your backyard, taking a break is the easiest way to get those creative juices flowing.
