With the pressures of the modern world attacking us every day, it’s easy to feel down and out. You may have work stress, health problems, relationship problems, financial problems or any number of other problems, and all of us go through stress from time to time. It’s during these difficult times that we have to dig deep and pick ourselves up by the bootstraps. But how can we do that?

Here, I’d like to detail the most effective method I’ve ever tried for being happier, healthier and stronger. It’s expressing gratitude.

My routine for expressing gratitude

Years ago, I would always be complaining about all the injustices I thought were happening in my life. Then, I started doing reading about mental health and exercises I could do to clear my mind and have a more positive outlook. It was at this time that I got interested in how feeling grateful could help make me happier, and very slowly, I got more and more proficient at expressing gratitude and being grateful.

Every morning, I now do the following:

  • Consider how I’m grateful to be healthy and fit
  • Be thankful for living in a first-world country
  • Say a few words of thanks to all the people who have helped me over the course of my life
  • Do 50 burpees (before or after the above – depends how I feel on the day)

With this short exercise routine and these simple steps for practicing gratitude, I automatically feel much better at the start of each day. And the entire thing only takes 5 to 10 minutes – not a bad return on investment!

Why should we practice gratitude?

It may not be easy, or even possible, to remove negative thoughts entirely. However, it’s much easier to balance them out by having much more positive thoughts – and there’s nothing more positive for your mental well being than thinking about all the things that make you a fortunate person. Practicing gratitude will make you a better and happier person in every aspect of your life.
